Scream 7 is officially in development with Christopher Landon replacing Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directing

A seventh film in the hugely successful Scream series is officially in development – but with a new director at the helm.

Scream 6 was released in March with a new Ghostface killer targeting survivors of the Woodsboro Legacy Murders in New York City – the movie was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

But sources told The Hollywood Reporter that Christopher Landon has been brought in to lead the new position.

The director of the new feature film in the series previously worked on two films in the Paranormal Activity franchise, directing the comedy horror film Happy Death Day and its sequel Happy Death Day 2U.

Filmmaking duo Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett also directed the fifth feature film Scream, which will be released in 2022.

The two reportedly took a step back to focus on developing a horror movie for Universal.

The production of the aforementioned project is also affected by the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett, as well as Chad Villella, will all serve as executive producers on the seventh Scream film.

Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera, who starred in Scream VI, are also expected to reprise their roles as Sam and Tara Carpenter.

The pair’s deals have not yet been signed in response to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, though they are expected to go through once the entertainment industry’s troubles are resolved.

The upcoming feature is currently unscripted and the storyline is being kept from the public.

The first installment in the Scream franchise, co-created by horror veteran Wes Craven, was released in 1996 and quickly became successful for its graphic violence and meta-fictional humor.

The feature film helped establish the careers of artists such as Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell, and David Arquette.

The first film in the franchise was succeeded by a sequel that premiered in 1997.

The third and fourth installments in the franchise were subsequently released in 2000 and 2011 respectively.

The Scream series was relaunched in 2022, although many characters from the first four films returned for the fifth and sixth films in the series.

The upcoming seventh installment in the long-running franchise currently has no scheduled release date.
