Scottie Scheffler just became the first golfer to ever win the Players Championship and thanked his wife Meredith for her support at home.

Scheffler won and narrowly avoided a playoff when Wyndham Clark’s birdie putt on the 18th hole somehow panned out.

When asked how he approaches the game mentally, Scheffler says he doesn’t feel like his ego is inflated and his family helps keep him grounded.

“In this environment where everything is recorded, I think it can be a tough place to be 100% honest all the time,” Scheffler said. ‘You have to be careful and don’t want to say the wrong thing these days.

“But ultimately I think it all goes back to the support system at home. I have a really great support system. I am very grateful for it.

‘I have a wonderful wife and if I took my trophies and put them all over the house and went for a brisk walk, I think she would hit me on the side of the head and tell me that I would get over myself pretty quickly had to come.

“So winning golf tournaments definitely doesn’t get me any brownie points at home, so I just try to do my best.”

Scheffler’s career is currently at a high point: he has won two consecutive events on this PGA Tour calendar.

Just last week at Bay Hill, Scheffler defeated Clark again (this time by five strokes) to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The next leg of the PGA Tour’s so-called ‘Florida Swing’ is the Valspar Championship on the Copperhead Course – with the Masters fast approaching.

Scheffler could become only the second player ever to win the Players and the Masters in the same year if he finds success at Augusta and joins Tiger Woods in a rarefied atmosphere.
