Scottie Scheffler won’t want to remember his performance in the final round of the Open on Sunday, when he made three putts from six yards out and shot a tee shot from 150 yards.
The 28-year-old Scottie came into the mix on the par-4 9th but unexpectedly found the left rough with his tee shot, playing his second just short of the green, leaving him with a 50-foot up-and-down for par.
Scottie went for a putt, which left him with a distance of 1.83 meters for a score of 1.44 meters.
From there, things went downhill for the world number one, as he three-putted for a double bogey, dashing his hopes of winning his first Open Championship in 30 seconds.
It was hard to watch his breakdown, but the look on Scheffler’s face afterwards said it all. He closed his eyes and knew he had made a lot of mistakes.
A DAY TO FORGET: Scottie Scheffler’s tee shot and putting went horribly wrong on Sunday
“Is Scottie Scheffler the worst superstar putter we’ve ever seen?” someone asked on X.
“I’m a big Scottie Scheffler guy,” said another on Elon Musk’s social media platform. “He has no weakness from tee to green. Neither does Xander Schauffele. But Xander is a better putter.”
Someone else wrote something similar: ‘If Scottie Scheffler could putt, I’m not sure anyone would ever win.’
Scottie appeared frustrated after the final lap, as cameras captured him with his eyes closed
At the end of the Open, Scheffler was in seventh place, tied with SJ M of South Korea and Jon Rahm of Spain.
The American was 1 over par in the fourth (final) round and had a total of -1.
Scheffler is now expected to compete at the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota (July 25-28) and the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina (August 8-11).
The FedEx St. Jude and BMW Championships (each with $20 million prize money) will take place August 15-18 and August 22-25, respectively.
