Scottie Scheffler returned to the PGA Tour with an emphatic statement Thursday, taking the lead at the Memorial Tournament – his first event since all charges were dropped in Kentucky last week.
Scheffler birdied the final hole to finish the day at five under par.
At that point he was joined by Adam Hadwin as they both held a one lead over a number of players including PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele.
Scheffler was stopped last month ahead of his second round at the PGA Championship after trying to drive onto the course in heavy traffic caused by an unrelated crash that left a male pedestrian dead.
The world number one was released in time to return to Valhalla and post a remarkable 66, but only after being charged with four offenses, the most serious of which was second-degree assault on a police officer, which is a misdemeanor .
The charges were dropped twelve days later, with Scheffler discovering this would be the case during the previous week’s Charles Schwab Challenge – where he finished second.
