Scott McTominay could bring athleticism and aggression to midfield and Harry Maguire could offer options to David Moyes as the West Ham boss tries to fill the gaps in his side

Scott McTominay could bring athleticism and aggression to West Ham’s midfield and the signing of Harry Maguire could see David Moyes switch to a back three: how the Man United pair could fit in at the London Stadium

TransferRoom, the online marketplace used by over 700 clubs worldwide to arrange signings, recently saw West Ham advertise their needs.

They listed seven positions: left-back, central defender, defensive midfielder, central midfielder, striker, winger and No. 10. Edson Alvarez will occupy one of those slots – his £35m transfer from Ajax is almost complete – and Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire could fill two other voids.

Manchester United have already turned down two £30m bids for McTominay and Maguire – they are said to want £45m for their midfielder and £35m for their defender – but talks are underway over a compromise with West Ham.

Manager David Moyes is looking to replace Declan Rice’s hole in his midfield. He loses one of the best interceptors and carriers of the ball in the Premier League and tries to buy it back.

Alvarez and McTominay would be a strong combination for West Ham. Lucas Paqueta would benefit from the bite they would bring as he seems to keep sprinkling his creativity.

West Ham have made an improved £30 million bid for Manchester United’s Harry Maguire

The Hammers have also offered £30 million for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay

Alvarez is a talented midfielder whose statistics show the similarities he shares with Rice. Both men know how to win the ball and carry it forward.

McTominay is an underrated player who has proven himself in the Premier League and would bring athleticism and aggression to the engine room.

West Ham’s moves for those two make sense. As for Maguire, this chase is led by Moyes and it’s enough to make you wonder if he’s interested in moving from a back four to a back three for the new season. The United man could be between Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd. It would at least give Moyes the option to switch systems, something he’s loved to do in the past when facing stronger opponents.

When West Ham became the last remaining Premier League club to sign a player, doom and gloom reigned over the club. You just had to log into social media to feel that. However, if they get these transfers over the line, that disastrous feeling will soon disappear.

West Ham boss David Moyes has seven positions to fill during the transfer window

But as West Ham tick off some of the positions they’ve posted on TransferRoom, they need to address their striker situation. That is an absolute must.

Gianluca Scamacca has now left the club and will leave for Atalanta after one season. Mikhail Antonio can still follow him out the door. Danny Ings has not been able to convince since he started in January last year.

West Ham need a goalscorer or they will be in trouble. Chelsea’s Armando Broja, Arsenal’s Folarin Balogun and Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke are all possibilities, while they have also been linked with a bold move for Barcelona’s Ansu Fati.

Alvarez will be a good start. McTominay would make it even sweeter as would Maguire if they can get him for a good price. From there, a striker should become their priority.
