Scott McTominay is now the joint top scorer of Euro 2024 qualifying after scoring his sixth goal in five games to lead Scotland to the cusp of glory.
Thanks to their comfortable 3-0 win over Cyprus, Steve Clarke’s side are just two points away from officially confirming their place at next year’s tournament.
And they were again propelled to their fifth successive win by midfielder McTominay, whose international exploits are in stark contrast to his club woes.
He was firmly in the pecking order under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United and was even expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.
Instead, however, he seemingly channeled all the lingering frustration into another barnstorming performance for his country, leading to their early breakthrough.
Scott McTominay scored his sixth goal of five Euro 2024 qualifying during Scotland’s victory over Cyprus
The midfielder bravely headed home within the first six minutes to make the breakthrough
McTominay, who is having a bad club season at Manchester United, celebrated it enthusiastically
With just six minutes left on the clock, Andy Robertson’s cross was flicked home by John McGinn, with McTominay bravely challenging for the ball and nodding home.
With his head firmly in the line of fire, McTominay took his qualifying tally to six goals, drawing level with Dane Rasmus Hojlund and Belgian Romelu Lukaku.
Remarkably, the likes of Harry Kane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappé are all behind McTominay, who seems reborn on the biggest stages.
A draw between Norway and Georgia next Tuesday would confirm Scotland’s qualification, meaning their progression to Germany is now all but assured.
Clarke’s side were dominant on their way to extending their impressive 100 per cent record, with Ryan Porteous and McGinn also both on target in the first half.
