Scientists reveal how many minutes you lose of life every time you eat a cheeseburger, hotdog or drink a coke
You might want to think twice before deciding what to devour at your next baseball game, because depending on which concession you buy, you could be cutting precious moments from your life.
Nutritionist Luis Alberto Zamora has revealed how unhealthy foods affect life expectancy in a television segment on ultra-processed foods (UPFs).
He pointed to a study by researchers at the University of Michigan that calculated exactly how much time popular UPFs take up in a person’s life.
The study found that a hot dog costs you an average of 36 minutes – and if you wash it down with a soft drink, you shave another 12 minutes off your life.
The study wasn’t all bad news, however, as scientists also found that eating certain types of fish can give you 28 minutes of life gain.
The study ranked more than 5,800 U.S. foods and determined their health costs by analyzing them based on their additives and micro and macronutrients, such as fats, calories and sugars.
While many favorites, such as hot dogs, pizza, and macaroni and cheese, shortened a person’s lifespan, others—such as fruits, vegetables, and even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches—were found to actually help a person live longer.
The researchers also found that for every 10 percent of daily calories from fruits and vegetables instead of beef and processed meat, a person could add an estimated 48 minutes to their lifespan.
Dr. Olivier Jolliet, who led the study, said at the time: ‘The urgency of dietary changes to improve human health… is clear. Our findings show that small, targeted substitutions provide a feasible and powerful strategy to achieve significant health and environmental benefits without the need for dramatic dietary changes.”

Nearly 75 percent of the food consumed in the U.S. is considered ultra-processed and packed with additives and potentially harmful ingredients.
Numerous studies have found a link between a diet high in UPF and more than 30 conditions, including multiple cancers, and early death.
In the study, the foods analyzed ranged from processed meats and sweets to healthier dishes such as fish and vegetables.
Overall, the University of Michigan study found Hot dogs were the worst food, followed by cured meats like prosciutto, which could cost you 24 minutes of your life.
Egg sandwiches and breakfast came in third, each shaving 13.6 minutes off a person’s healthy lifespan.
Hot dogs in particular are at greater risk of shortening life because they contain nitrites and nitrates, which are preservatives.
However, these can be converted by the body into a substance linked to colon cancer after they are consumed.
They are also high in sugar and fat, which can be a risk factor for diabetes.
Both bacon, which takes six minutes of life, and cheeseburgers, which take nine minutes, can also increase the risk of early death because they are red or processed meat.
Some studies have linked these ingredients to cancer.
Hamburgers can also be cooked in a vegetable oil that may contain compounds – such as aldehyde – that increase a person’s risk of cancer.
And concerns have also been raised about sweeteners such as aspartame used in sugar-free soft drinks robbing you of twelve minutes of your life, after animal studies found high levels increase the risk of cancer.
However, scientists have yet to prove a link in humans.

On the other hand, switching to a more plant-based diet and staying away from red and processed meat has been shown to increase life expectancy – by reducing the risk of cancer and other ailments.
The researchers found that a peanut butter and jelly sandwich was the best food for adding healthy years – giving a healthy lifespan of 32 minutes.
Meanwhile, nuts and seeds came in second place – with plus 24 minutes – and fruit in third place – with plus 10 minutes.
Dr. Jolliet told me earlier Toronto star that PB&J scored the highest because of the peanut butter it contained.
“When we do the analysis, we don’t necessarily see all the effects of any food on body mass index,” she said, “but [the PB&J’s] beneficial because of the peanuts.’
“This is really the reason, not the jam. And the bread is probably bland, but if it’s a whole wheat bread, it’s just a little tastier.’
For the study, the team developed a new assessment called the ‘Health Nutritional Index’, which calculated the health burden of certain portions of food in terms of the minutes of healthy life lost or gained from eating them.

It was developed from the Global Burden of Disease study, which linked overall incidence and mortality from certain diseases to individuals’ food choices.
It comes after scientists working on the new US dietary guidelines suggested that Americans should be told to eat less red meat.
The report said people should emphasize plant-based proteins such as beans, peas and lentils and limit their consumption of red and processed meat.
This was based on a review of numerous studies linking the meat to a higher risk of diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
Researchers said that people should generally consume 26 ounces of meat per week, but that “less” of this should come from red meat.
