Schools in Delhi will be closed up to class 5 for the next five days due to cold weather

Due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, schools in Delhi will remain closed for students from kindergarten to class 5 for the next five days till January 12, Delhi Minister Atishi said on Sunday.

“Schools in Delhi will remain closed for the next five days due to the prevailing cold weather conditions, for students from kindergarten to class 5,” Atishi said in a post on X.

The Delhi government in its previous decision extended winter break till January 10 in all government-aided and non-aided recognized private schools of the National Capital Territory (NCT) in view of 'extreme cold wave and IMD's yellow alert' . However, hours after its issuance, the Delhi government withdrew the order regarding extension of winter vacation in schools in the national capital.

From a cold day to a very cold day, the weather condition was in Delhi, parts of East Rajasthan, Northwest Rajasthan, Haryana and in isolated areas over Punjab, amid absence of sunlight.

Maximum temperatures recorded at several stations showed a significant deviation from the normal range for this time of year.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cold to severe cold conditions are likely to continue over Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan in the coming day and then taper off significantly.

Maximum temperatures are between 9 and 12°C in large parts of Punjab and Haryana; and in the range of 13-16 °C in northern Rajasthan, Delhi, northwestern Madhya Pradesh and some parts of Uttar Pradesh. In these areas the temperature is 4-9°C below normal.

The minimum temperatures are in the range of 6-15°C over Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, northwest Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Today, the lowest minimum temperature of 2.0°C was reported in Sikar (East Rajasthan).

The skyline over Delhi remained gray as cold conditions continued to grip the city.

As the temperature dropped in Delhi, people sat around the campfire to keep themselves warm.

People were also spotted having a bonfire in Agra as cold conditions continued in several parts of Uttar Pradesh state. According to IMD, Agra will experience fog/mist in the morning and mainly clear skies later' with the minimum temperature dropping to 7°C and the maximum temperature 19°C.

According to IMD, northwest and central India are likely to receive fresh spell of rain with thundershowers/hail showers from January 8 to 10.

Meanwhile, rehearsals for the Republic Day parade on January 26 were held at Kartavya Path as cold conditions and fog continued in the national capital.
