The driver drove along Emu Park Road in Nankin, near Rockhampton, at 5:15 a.m. Monday.
“It currently appears that a bus collided with two camels, killing the bus driver,” he said.
“That’s part of our investigation now, we have a crash forensic unit there that will investigate and, as you can imagine, that’s not going to be a quick process.
“Our thoughts go out to that bus driver’s family and friends.”
Camel racer and breeder John Richardson said his camels had been hit and shared his condolences with the bus driver’s family.
I’m just devastated,” he said. “It’s just shocking.”
A spokesman for the Queensland Ambulance Service said a nearby motorist had passed the crash site before calling emergency services.
The spokesman said it was unclear how long the bus had been trapped in the embankment before it was discovered.
Emu Park Road near Thompson Point Road was closed in both directions as police combed the crime scene.
