SC agrees to review Colorado's decision to rule on access to Trump's 2024 ballots

Trump's campaign said it supports a “fair hearing” on the Colorado voting dispute at the Supreme Court

The US Supreme Court announced Friday that it would review the Colorado Supreme Court's historic ruling to ban former President Donald Trump from running for office in that state's elections, according to CNN.

Notably, the court has scheduled oral arguments for February 8.

Because the Supreme Court has not yet ruled on the lower court's disqualification of Trump, he is still listed on the primary ballot.

Any votes cast for Trump would be voided if the courts decide he is not qualified to hold public office. The Supreme Court's decision to hear the case puts the nine justices in the middle of the 2024 elections, just as the first elections are about to begin.

The state court's decision last month all but guaranteed that the justices would have to hear the contentious issue and decide whether or not Trump could be removed from the ballot.

Although the Colorado decision is limited to that state, courts in a number of other states have examined questions about Trump's eligibility; however, none of these cases have progressed as far as the Colorado finding. Trump's team filed an appeal in state court on Tuesday after Maine's secretary of state withdrew him from the 2024 primaries last week, CNN reported.

Trump's campaign said it supports a “fair hearing” on the Colorado voting dispute at the Supreme Court.

Colorado's top election official on Friday certified the 2024 presidential primary with Trump's name on the Republican ballot, putting the decision on hold while the U.S. Supreme Court decides how to handle the issue, CNN reported.

Votes for Trump would be voided if the courts rule before Colorado's primary that he is ineligible for public office.

On Wednesday, a week after the Republican Party of Colorado also requested that the issue be heard by the justices, Trump appealed the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Under last month's surprise 4-3 ruling, Trump's actions on January 6, 2021 fall under the 14th Amendment bar for insurrectionists holding office, making him constitutionally ineligible to run for office in 2024.
