Sawyers Valley crash: Man dies after his car mysteriously plunged into a property’s dam late at night

A man has died after plowing his car into a dam in a mysterious late-night accident.

The blue Mitsubishi Lancer hatchback ended up on its roof, submerged in a body of water, after veering off a road in the Sawyers Valley, about 40 kilometers east of Perth, about 10pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services and police divers worked overnight to remove the driver and the car.

“Tragically, police discovered the body of a 34-year-old man inside the vehicle,” WA Police said.

The car was later pulled from the dam, which was on private property.

Shocked neighbors recalled hearing a commotion as the car slid into the three-metre deep dam and sank to the bottom of the ‘very murky and very cold’ water.

“I just saw the taillights underwater – that’s it,” witness Chris Woodward told Seven News.

He called 911, but when emergency services arrived it was too late to save the driver.

Another neighbor described hearing a “whooshing sound.”

“There was absolutely nothing I could do, the dam is about ten feet deep, very cloudy and very cold,” the neighbor said.

“It’s terribly tragic, you don’t want this to ever happen on your doorstep.”
