Save a third on your holiday… by staying a day longer! Couples who choose to extend their 10-night trip to 11 nights can save more than £1,000

  • Thought to be a result of demand and flights coming out cheaper

Less is more, as the famous saying goes. But not necessarily when it comes to our vacations, it turns out.

Research has shown that travelers can make huge savings this summer by staying at a destination for a longer period of time.

Good news for those looking to cut the cost of their holiday: couples who choose to extend their 10-night trip to 11 can save more than £1,000, according to Which?’s research.

This is believed to be due to high demand, with 11-night holidays less popular and flights being cheaper on some days than others.

The consumer champion analyzed the prices of 400 package holidays from easyJet, Jet2, Love Holidays, On The Beach and Tui, among others.

In 26 cases, researchers found that staying 11 nights instead of 10 was generally cheaper

In one case, a couple who took an all-inclusive four-star package holiday in Fuerteventura with Tui in August saved £1,188 by extending their stay from ten nights to eleven nights, a saving of 28 per cent.

The shorter break would have cost £4,148, but opting for 11 nights reduced the price to £2,960.

In 26 cases, researchers found that staying 11 nights instead of 10 was generally cheaper.

In another case – also with Tui – two people sharing a double room with a balcony or terrace in Corfu on a bed and breakfast basis can save £584 together, or £292 per person.

This would cut the cost of the holiday by almost a third (31 percent), from £1,862 to £1,278. Which? also discovered package examples where an extra night would cost a little extra change.

For £1 more per person, two people can extend a ten-night stay in Crete with easyJet to 11 nights, bringing the total cost to £2,544 for a bed and breakfast (versus ten nights at £2,542).

Jo Rhodes, deputy editor of Which? Travel, said: ‘If you’re booking a holiday it’s worth seeing if you can save money by making a few small changes to your travel dates and length of stay.

While it may seem counterintuitive, there are occasionally significant savings to be had by extending your trip.

Ms Rhodes added: ‘There are of course plenty of other ways to reduce the cost of holidays. Shop around online to find the best price for accommodation and flights – using price comparison sites can be a good place to start.

“You can also save money on your plane ticket by opting out of extras – for example, we’ve found that most airlines will let you sit together even if you don’t pay for pre-selected seats.”
