South Korea’s Samsung Medical Center has become the first hospital in the Asia Pacific to be accredited for Phase 6 of the HIMSS Adoption Model for Analytics Maturity.
The AMAM measures an organization’s capabilities and progress in healthcare analytics.
WHY IT MATTERS
Based on HIMSS’s evaluation, SMC demonstrated a robust analytics infrastructure and foundation, which includes a Clinical Data Warehouse, an Enterprise Data Warehouse, and cloud technologies that enable multiple ways to extract and analyze data for research and other clinical activities.
SMC also showed good examples of AI solutions and integrations in clinical workflows, especially the Fall Risk Score and Critical Interventions Score in the Emergency Room. Another AI tool, the Data-based Operation and Communication Center (DOCC) PAN, was also recognized for enabling staff to address observable issues.
In preparation for a Phase 7 AMAM validation, SMC is expected to make some improvements to its analysis capabilities. These include demonstrating the use of analytics for treatment optimization, early disease detection and mortality rates, and demonstrating the use of analytics in operations, such as reducing unnecessary testing and optimizing the supply chain.
It was also recommended that the hospital investigate the proactive alerts and potential remediation recommendations in the DOCC PAN.
THE BIG TREND
At the beginning of this year, SMC received two more Phase 7 validations for the Digital Imaging Adoption Model and the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model. These followed the Stage 7 Infrastructure Adoption Model certification last year. The hospital also topped all healthcare systems worldwide in the 2022 HIMSS Digital Health Indicator rankings.
Having proven the credibility of its IT infrastructure, SMC is now taking steps to improve patient safety, clinical care and operations by implementing a cyclical process of analyzing data and applying that analysis back to clinical practice.
The hospital has been able to predict testing volumes for some time to manage test wait times and reduce patient crowding. It has also predicted fall risks, allowing the time some nurses spend on patient monitoring to be diverted back to actual care.
Furthermore, it has consolidated disparate anonymous data sources to provide researchers with a unified data set. SMC is now able to provide researchers with histological classification of lung cancer, increasing the synergy of data processing.
ON THE RECORD
“With a number of HIMSS maturity model validations under its belt, SMC has once again proven its commitment to digital excellence with this Stage 6 AMAM certification – a first for APAC. With this achievement, the hospital is demonstrating how it is improving patient safety and the overall quality of clinical care through the effective use and deployment of analytics across the enterprise,” said Simon Lin, VP and Managing Director of APAC at HIMSS.
“Through the AMAM certification, SMC has sought objective validation of its efforts to establish a cyclical process of using data analysis results for feedback in clinical and operational practices. This certification has allowed us to re-examine our goals and direction, and as a result, it has given us the confidence to move forward, in addition to receiving a positive evaluation as the first in the APAC region,” said Prof. Deok-Hyun Han, Deputy CMIO at SMC.
The next part of SMC’s digital transformation journey, said Jong-Soo Choi, PhD, IT leader at SMC, is to integrate its digital pathology with AI; explore ways to analyze patient-reported outcome results; and create eligibility criteria for enrolling participants in clinical trials and integrate these criteria with the clinical system.
The hospital is also entering a “new era in cancer treatment” as it has started using the Onco DB to structure genetic mutation information and implement automation.
