Samsung’s latest foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6, were unveiled during the company’s recent Unpacked event. We got to see the phones in all their next-gen glory, from the Z Fold 6’s flashy new design to the Z Flip 6’s improved camera array.
It’s not all hardware upgrades, though. The pair introduces multiple AI features, but the most interesting is Interpreter. It offers quick live translations from multiple languages. Transcripts appear on both the Cover and Main screens of the phones via Conversation Mode.
Imagine you are talking to someone who doesn’t speak English and you have a question.
By speaking directly into the microphone, Interpreter writes the translated text on the outer display. The other person can then record their voice by pressing the prompt on the screen and the answer is quickly translated on the inner display for you to read.
Interpreter is already available on the Galaxy S24, but because it has a single display, you have to flip the phone over to get the translation to appear or have the AI voice speak out loud. So that second screen really makes a world of difference.
It wasn’t a flawed system, but the outer screen makes for a smoother experience between parties. You don’t have to turn the phone over to have a conversation or press the device in their face.
Limitations of functions
There are several things to keep in mind if you are planning to use Interpreter on your next vacation. Not all of these details were mentioned in the announcement post, as some of this information was only found in the fine print on the official Unpacked 2024 livestream.
First, both the Z Fold and Z Flip 6 must be in Flex mode. This means they must be halfway open, like a mini laptop, in order to use the feature.
It’s unknown how many languages Interpreter will support. Demos show English, Korean, French, and Thai. If it’s anything like the S24, that could be 13 different languages in total, with support for a handful of dialects. Also, keep in mind that the translations might not be the cleanest. Samsung even states in the fine print of the livestream that “the accuracy of results is not guaranteed.”
The foldable earbuds do offer the option to listen to translations via the aptly named Listen Mode, which could be useful “when attending a lecture in a foreign language or traveling to other countries.” You’ll need a pair of Galaxy Buds, such as the Buds 3 Pro, to listen to these translations privately, though. Other earbuds won’t work.
