The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 could be the most popular foldable phone of the year, but that will largely have to do with its price.
We expect to see these rumored next-generation flippable foldable phones revealed this Wednesday, July 10, at the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. There we’re expecting to get a good look at all the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 pricing; check out our guide on how to watch Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024.
Typically, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip phones vastly undercut the Galaxy Z Fold line, even costing less than some conventional smartphones. That, combined with Samsung’s considerable brand power, makes them inevitably popular choices.
Will the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 continue that trend? Or will Samsung push the price to higher levels than in previous years? While nothing is certain yet, we can make some predictions based on leaks coupled with the line’s history.
How much is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 likely to cost?
Often, a new phone model has a similar or even identical price to its predecessor. So there’s a good chance that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 will cost about the same as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.
The full price for that phone can be seen in the chart below. But considering it starts at $999.99 / £1,049 / AU$1,649, that’s probably the least you should expect from the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6.
That said, there’s a small chance it could actually cost less, especially since a leak suggests Samsung is using a cheaper method of making the bezels on the phone. That doesn’t mean the savings will be passed on to consumers, but it’s possible.
Storage | US | UK | Australia |
256GB | $999.99 | €1,049 | AU$1,649 |
512GB | $1,119.99 | €1,149 | AU$1,849 |
Lowering the price could certainly be beneficial in making the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 a popular, mainstream smartphone. In addition to using cheaper production methods, there’s also a chance that Samsung’s current production costs could drop as manufacturers get better at manufacturing the components for foldable phones.
That said, we don’t think a price cut is likely, especially as the price – at least in the UK and Australia – has increased over the years. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 for comparison started at $999.99 / £999 / AU$1,499, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 started at $999 / £949 / AU$1,499.
The price in the US hasn’t changed in years, which could mean the price there will be $999.99 again. However, it could also mean the price will increase soon.
If there does happen a price hike, we don’t expect it to be more than around an extra $50 / £50 / AU$150 based on previous data, bringing the starting price to around $1,050 / £1,100 / AU$1,800. Or perhaps we’ll only see these price hikes in certain regions.
Unfortunately, a leak suggests that the Z Flip 6 will see a $100 price increase in the US, bringing its starting price to $1,099.99. However, there’s no word on whether other regions will follow suit.
However, it’s also possible that the price won’t increase at all. One leak suggests that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will have a similar price to the Galaxy Z Flip 5.
For now, our best guess is that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 will be priced at the same price as the Z Flip 5 or slightly higher. Lower seems unlikely, but not impossible.
Whatever the price, you’ll likely get the same amount of storage and RAM as the current model (so 256GB and 8GB). However, a leak suggests that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 will come with a maximum of 12GB of RAM, which would represent an increase at the top-end.
Could a cheaper Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 FE be coming?
There have been reports that Samsung is working on a cheaper, possibly “FE”-branded foldable phone for this year. But most – though not all – reports specifically say it’ll be a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE, not a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 FE. And the other leaks don’t specify which line it’ll belong to.
So aside from the slim chance that the standard Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 will be cheaper than its predecessor, you probably won’t get a cheaper clamshell foldable from Samsung this year.
That said, one leak suggests the Galaxy Z Fold 6 FE will cost even less than the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 is likely to cost. So it could be possible we could get a cheaper Samsung foldable in a different form factor.
