The Samsung Galaxy S24, Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra have landed, and while the first two aren’t as exciting as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, they still pack an assortment of impressive specs.
Those specs include a high-end chipset, although the exact chipset you get with the S24 and S24 Plus will depend on where you are in the world. If you’re in the US you’ll get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, an overclocked version of Qualcomm’s fastest smartphone chipset, while UK buyers will get an Exynos 2400 for Galaxy, Samsung’s top mobile chipset.
So in both cases you can expect loads of power, but if you’re in the UK and want a Snapdragon version, you’ll have to pay for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, which has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy everywhere. .
In any case, the standard Galaxy S24 is also equipped with 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM, while the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus has 12GB, which is a match for the Ultra. That can be combined with 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB (UFS 4.0) storage in the case of the standard Samsung Galaxy S24, with 256 GB or 512 GB if you get the S24 Plus, and with 256 GB, 512 GB or a heavier 1 TB storage if you buy the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.
It’s not just the hardware that’s heavy, as Samsung seems to have put a similar amount of attention into the software, and the AI features in particular. These extend to the latest Galaxy S models and help with photo editing, live conversation translation, summarizing your notes and more.
But we’re just scratching the surface here. One of the most significant upgrades on all three of these phones is screen brightness, as they all now have a peak brightness of 2,600 nits, which is a significant improvement over the 1,750 nits of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series. That makes these displays clearer and easier to see in bright, direct sunlight.
In the case of the standard Samsung Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24 Plus, you also get slightly larger screens this year, 6.2 inches and 6.7 inches respectively, and the Galaxy S24 Plus has switched from the FHD+ resolution of its predecessor to a QHD+ resolution now.
The standard and Plus models also have larger batteries than their predecessors, at 4,000 mAh and 4,900 mAh respectively. That’s an increase from 3,900 mAh on the Galaxy S23 and 4,700 mAh on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus.
No such upgrades exist for the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, which has the same screen size and battery capacity as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. What the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra does have, however – apart from the brighter screen and faster chipset described above – is a new 50 MP periscope camera with 5x optical zoom.
The rest of the camera hardware on this phone is pretty much the same as last year, but considering the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra tops our list of the best camera phones, that’s not a bad thing. For a deeper dive, check out our guide to the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra cameras.
Sadly, the standard Samsung Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus don’t get this new periscope camera, and in fact their camera hardware seems functionally unchanged from the previous models, although there’s now a new 2x optical zoom feature through sensor cropping on both phones. Check out our article on the Samsung Galaxy S24 cameras for more information.
They also lack the titanium frame of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (which is an upgrade from the aluminum of the S23 Ultra), instead featuring an ‘Enhanced Armor Aluminum’ frame that is said to be 10% stronger. So the two cheaper phones should at least be durable, but they’re stuck with a less premium material than the Ultra.
