Sam Worthington takes a very pointed swipe at his homeland after slamming Aussie reporter for using wife Lara’s maiden name
Australian expat actor Sam Worthington has taken a not-so-subtle swipe at his home country.
Sam and wife Lara Bingle are currently splitting their time between Sydney and New York, but the Avatar star revealed he had no plans for a permanent move Down Under anytime soon.
Speak with GQ AustraliaSam said he owed “everything” to his adopted homeland.
‘No. I love America,” Sam said when asked if a move was in the couple’s future.
“America gave me everything and I’ve been here for like 20 years, man. There’s anonymity, but there’s also a real sense of community, which is really cool.”
Sam added that he was also charmed by New York – a place where his acting isn’t always the first topic of conversation.

“I have friends there and we don’t even talk about my work,” he said. “In New York City, no one cares about my work. I love it.’
Sam also revealed in the interview that he would be working on a number of new projects Down Under in the new year.
‘The intention was that I would make another film next year, but we have now pushed through that. Then there are some jobs in Australia,” Sam explained.
‘When I was younger, you chose films based on where they were filmed and thought, “Oh, I’ve never been to that country, I’m going to do that”. So it’s nice that there are some things in Australia again.’
Sam’s comments come after he had an awkward encounter with a reporter on the red carpet of the GQ Men Of the Year Awards earlier this month.
Channel Seven reporter Sally Bowery introduced Sam’s 37-year-old wife to viewers of the Sydney event by her maiden name Lara Bingle – and it went down like a lead balloon.
“Her name is Lara Worthington,” the 48-year-old Avatar star clapped back.
“It’s only been ten years,” a clearly irritated Sam quickly added.

Bowery quickly apologized for his mistake.
“Those were my panties,” she said.
Later in the evening, the Avatar star was crowned GQ’s Man of the Year.
After the Bingle fuss on the red carpet, Sally clapped back at the actor in a column for Seven.
‘I said Lara’s maiden name. Not the wrong name. Just a name she had used for much of her life. A name that was a household name long before she met her husband,” Sally said.
She insisted that Lara herself didn’t seem “in the least bothered” by her mistake and laughed it off as she shared her confusion about why Sam wanted her to be called by her married name.
Sally argued, “Then why not at an event where her husband celebrated what it means to be a modern man now?” A married woman’s identity is much more than her husband’s last name.’
She then quoted Sam’s own acceptance speech when he was crowned Man of the Year hours later, in which he spoke about the need to leave behind outdated views.
‘[He told] the masses say that men can “love others unconditionally and respectfully, without having to conform to an outdated standard or a stereotypical, archaic and downright sad idea of what a man should be.”
“I completely agree,” she concluded.
Sam and Lara started dating in 2013 and secretly married in 2014. They have since welcomed three sons: Racer, eight, River, four, and Rocket, nine.
