Sam Smith is a far cry from their daring stage costumes as they casually smoke a cigarette while catching up with friends in New York.

They have created quite a statement with their bold and eccentric costumes of late.

But Sam Smith seemed a far cry from his onstage persona as they stepped out in a casual ensemble to meet friends in New York’s West Village on Friday.

The non-binary singer, 30, rocked a relaxed figure in an oversized black coat that was layered over a striped white knit jumper.

They teamed the look with acid-wash jeans and white sneakers for the outing with their friend, who rocked a vibrant purple coat and patterned outfit.

Sam was unfazed by the recent drama, as earlier in the day, they were publicly called out for their performance of ‘Unholy’ opposite Kim Petras at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

In a video posted to social media, the non-binary star was accosted by an Irish woman at the Central Park Zoo for being a “sick, twisted, demonic bastard.”

“Sam Smith belongs in hell,” the woman could be heard yelling at the singer. ‘Leave the kids alone, you sick bastard.’

The Stay With Me singer kept walking as the unidentified Irish woman hurled insults at them.

During the racy performance of their hit single, Petras and Smith appeared dressed in red latex surrounded by dancers with whips and horns, including Sam, whose top hat was adorned with devil horns.

After the performance, host Trevor Noah immediately joked that the satanic themes would outrage some viewers.

The song got a similar reception at last week’s BRIT Awards, where the obscene acting got over 100 ofcom complaints about ‘devil worship’ and a passionate kiss.

The non-binary singer performed the hit along with Kim at London’s O2 on Saturday, where two backing dancers enjoyed a kiss at the end of the performance.

An Ofcom spokesperson told MailOnline: “We received 106 complaints about the Brit Awards on ITV1 on February 11.”

“Most of the complaints were related to Sam Smith’s performance, with the rest to the use of offensive language and alcohol consumption.”

Sam is in New York after being photographed supporting rumored boyfriend Christian from the front row during the city’s Fashion Week.

The couple were previously photographed together during a cozy outing in New York last month, but have yet to confirm if they are dating.
