Sam Quek wades into Giovanni Pernice bullying spat as she insists behind-the-scenes drama should not ‘take the shine’ off a ‘fantastic’ show: ‘It brings people together’

Sam Quek says the recent scandals that have rocked Strictly should not take the shine off what she calls a “fantastic programme”.

The former Olympian turned presenter was the 15th and final contestant confirmed for the new series last month.

She supported the show despite claims from former contestant Amanda Abbington that she was abused during rehearsals last year.

The 35-year-old hockey star also appeared to support Giovanni Pernice, the longest-serving male dancer on Strictly until he was accused of bullying by Ms Abbington.

The Sicilian dancer strongly denies any wrongdoing, and a BBC investigation is underway.

Ms Quek said: ‘Everyone has a different experience and I don’t know what their experience was. There are two sides to the truth.

‘Sometimes in life you have negative experiences. Yes, let’s deal with them, but that doesn’t take away the positive aspects.

‘It shouldn’t make Strictly any less. It’s a fantastic show. Everyone loves it because of the energy. [On] Saturday night brings people together.’

Ms Quek, who has played 125 caps for the England and Great Britain hockey teams, admits she is already taking Strictly seriously.

She said, ‘I’m competitive. Of course you want to win. Why wouldn’t you want to win the glitterball trophy? But wanting to win and being able to win are two completely different questions for me.’

The BBC presenter added: ‘I have no dancing experience. I’m here for the glow-up. I’m here to have a good time. I’m here to learn how to dance.

“It’s amazing to be in this situation, to learn to dance from a pro, a world champion, and to be part of a great show.”

Strictly fans have expressed their doubts about the inclusion of Tasha Ghouri – a former Love Islander – and former JLS boyband member JB Gill in this year’s line-up.

They both already have professional dance experience and are trained in commercial street dance style, which may give them an advantage.

But the duo say they have no Latin American or ballroom dance training.
