Sam Newman breaks his silence on his new ‘girl friend’ after the sudden death of his wife Amanda Brown

Sam Newman has broken his silence about the woman, making him laugh again.

The former footballer spends time with aerobics queen Sue Stanley but insists she is just a friend, albeit a female one.

“I'm very happy to say that I'm a friend of hers and she's a friend of mine, but that's it,” he told the Daily telegram on Tuesday.

“She's a friend of mine and those are two separate words: girlfriend, not girlfriend.”

The pair have been spotted together at a number of events in recent months and she regularly appears on his You Cannot Be Serious podcast.

The friends were side by side at the Sport Australia Hall of Fame lunch at the MCG on Friday, where they hugged for photos.

Stanley was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1998 for her contributions to aerobics.

'Sue is a good friend of mine. “If she has a position to fill and she needs someone to go with her, I go, and vice versa,” he said.

“We are companions and that (the dating rumors) is just not true. I'm her handbag and that's it.'

Last year, Sam shared his deep sadness over the loss of his wife and close friend over the course of a year.

The football star's wife, Amanda Brown, died suddenly in March 2021, before his friend, cricketer Shane Warne, passed away in March 2022.

“It has changed me significantly,” the 77-year-old Geelong Football Club legend said The Herald Sun.

“I became more circumspect and much more emotional about the people I know and the tragedies that happen or befall them.

'I have been affected by the two deaths I have witnessed. And dear Amanda, Sunday is the anniversary of her death and that really shocked me.'

He added: “Shane's death and Amanda's death have made me re-examine or re-evaluate the way I do things.

“I actually think about those two people almost every day, for a lot of different reasons.”

Warne died on March 4, the first day of a Thai holiday on the island of Koh Samui, after suffering a heart attack at his luxury villa at the age of 52.

On his own podcast You can't be serious Newman revealed that on the night of her death he was out getting fish and chips before quickly returning home.

He was worried after his wife didn't answer any of his calls.

Newman entered his Melbourne apartment and found his long-term partner dead on the floor. She had had a stroke.

He performed CPR on her for twenty minutes, even though he knew it was too late.

'I come home and walk in and the television is on in the bedroom. So I look down and I'm in her underwear. She has clearly been in bed or gotten out of bed to get something to eat,” he said.

'She's lying there on the tiles outside the laundry and as soon as I saw her I knew she was dead, I just knew it.

“It has changed me significantly,” said the 77-year-old Geelong Football Club legend

'I called 000 and the very helpful person said it was better to do CPR and she helped me through that.

“I've got the phone on speaker and I'm pumping this poor woman who looks so peaceful there, obviously dead, but the operator said keep doing it in case there's a spark of life in her.”

“So I give CPR for twenty minutes to what I knew was a dead body.”

Newman called his soulmate “loyal and loving, protective and strong will' in the podcast.
