See the Sam Kerr sledge that came back to haunt the Matildas in their horror Paris Olympics loss

  • Kerr beat rival nation after 2023 World Cup
  • Including a big laugh at her partner’s expense
  • That country could have the final say at the Olympic Games

Sam Kerr’s words have stuck with her after the injured Matildas captain trounced the US national soccer team for the same reason Australia were trounced by Germany at the Paris Olympics.

The Matildas were the star performers of Australian sport in 2023 after finishing a combative fourth at the FIFA Women’s World Cup, beating a number of major footballing nations.

After the tournament, the Tillies were in a daze and Kerr could face criticism of herself and the team later.

The comments came in the failed Netflix documentary series “Under Pressure: The US Women’s World Cup Team.”

The intention was to take a look behind the scenes of the courageous US women’s soccer team on their way to the world title. However, the giants of women’s soccer were already eliminated ingloriously in the group stage.

The documentary series aired anyway and Kerr took her chance to add even more misery to the American team by slamming her own partner Kristie Mewis.

“Do you know you guys have conceded eight goals this year, four of which came from set pieces,” Kerr asks.

“Yes, I know,” Mewis replies.

“Corners, to be exact,” Kerr explains.

‘That’s terrible, half of your goals come from corners. Aren’t you working on that?’

Mewis was stunned by the attack at the time.

“I’m joking, I’m joking. It’s got nothing to do with you!” Kerr said afterwards.

‘You were front post, if you had jumped a little higher it wouldn’t have reached the middle of the goal. I’m joking, it had nothing to do with you.’

Mewis was unimpressed by Kerr’s comments at the time, but the US may have the final say

Mewis remained in disbelief while her relative Pat laughed: “That was an attack, that was brutal.”

While Kerr was laughing at the time, there was no one in the Matildas camp joking after they were beaten 3-0 by Germany.

Two of those goals came from corner kicks, giving Team USA plenty of ammunition for their upcoming match at the Olympics.

The loss was a sense of déjà vu for coach Tony Gustavsson, who had inflicted a 5-2 defeat on Germany in his first match as manager of the Matildas.

“Congratulations Germany, they were a class better than us tonight, that’s just a fact,” said Gustavsson.

‘We really have to be honest about that, and I’ve said that to the players. You can clearly see that they are up to the speed of international football.

“We did everything we could to prepare for this so it wouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, but I don’t think we were ready for it.”

According to former Socceroo and football analyst Craig Foster, the damage could have been even worse if it had not been for a Matildas star player.

“If Katrina Gorry hadn’t made such a great tackle in the first half we might have been in even more trouble,” he said.

The Matildas hope experienced midfielder Tameka Yallop will return for the games against Zambia and the United States after she was injured for the match against Germany.

The 33-year-old veteran was a last-minute loss after suffering two contact injuries in early July.

She is expected to be fit enough to rejoin the 18-man squad for the Matildas’ next match against Zambia in Nice on Sunday.
