Australian soccer superstar Sam Kerr has given a rare look into his romance with American player girlfriend Kristie Mewis, including how they met and fell in love.
Speaking this week to UK online publication Foremanthe couple confirmed that they first met while playing for competing clubs in the National Women’s Soccer League in the US in 2019.
The couple later struck up a conversation via Instagram direct messages but, due to Covid restrictions, they were ‘forced’ to meet online.
Them they finally met in person for what was an unconventional ‘first date’.

“It took about three or four months before we were able to hang out in person,” Kerr said of his first romantic encounter with Mewis, a rival forward for the US national team.
“The first time we met was in quarantine, so we had to spend two weeks together the first time we met.
“I was thinking if I don’t like her, this is going to be awkward.”
But Kerr’s fears were unfounded. The couple fell head over heels in love in the run-up to the 2021 Olympics where, following the United States’ loss to Australia in the semifinals, they were photographed together for the first time.
Their hug on the pitch made headlines as Kerr’s breakup with his longtime ex-partner, fellow US club player Nikki Stanton, has yet to be made public.

“We didn’t share it for a long time,” Kerr said of his budding romance with Mewis.

“I remember one time we were out with some friends and some fans asked for a photo and then we thought we really didn’t want this to come out of someone else. We want to be the ones to share it.
“Once we told our friends, he started dating a bit.”

The pair are now preparing to face each other at the 2023 World Cup which will kick off on July 20 in Australia and New Zealand.
“We’re looking forward to the next six months for the World Cup,” says Kerr, who will lead Australia’s campaign from July.
