Sam Claflin appeared in good spirits as he filmed some night scenes in Manchester for the upcoming Amazon Prime limited series Lazarus.

The 37-year-old actor, dressed in a brown coat, stepped into his brand new character for a new story written by American author Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst.

The Me Before You star was filmed filming under drizzle, while police were also on set for the fictional crime investigation scene.

The Hunger Games alum was then seen smiling as he swapped his dress coat for a navy blue padded jacket.

Filming has begun on the psychological mystery thriller, and alongside Sam it will also star Love Actually favorite Bill Nighy and Welsh star Alexandra Roach. Variety reported earlier this week.

According to the synopsis, the series tells the story of a man “who returns home after his father’s suicide and begins to have disturbing experiences that cannot be explained.” He soon becomes entangled in a series of cold-case murders as he grapples with the mystery of his father’s death and his sister’s murder 25 years ago.

With Coben and Brocklehurst serving as writers and executive producers, the Daisy Jones & The Six star will have his hands full as he will also be an executive producer.

Coben boasts an overall deal with Netflix – especially after the groundbreaking success of Fool Me Once starring Michelle Keegan – but since Lazarus is an original idea, it’s not about those kinds of contracts.

Returning to Prime Screens after his role as Billy Dunne in Daisy Jones & The Six – Sam will star as Laz, who is described as a ‘respected forensic psychologist who has spent his life running from the pain of his past’.

But it seems he will be forced to face demons from the past when he finally returns home.

Heather Curtis, current series manager for Pan-English scripted SVOD TV at Amazon MGM Studios, said: “Lazarus” is a gripping series that grabs your attention from the very beginning.

“We are thrilled to partner with Harlan, Danny, Quay Street and the all-star cast of Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy and Alexandra Roach to tell this compelling story for our global Prime Video customers.”

Alexandra, 36, known for her roles in The Iron Lady and Killing Eve, will play Jenna Lazarus.

According to her character description, Jenna is ‘buried’ herself into a world of spiritual practice’, but once her brother returns home, she begins to experience inexplicable phenomena – and is also ultimately forced to confront secrets from her own past.

Pirates Of The Caribbean sensation Bill, 74, will star as Doctor Lazarus, or Dr. L., who is said to be a “psychologist and father of Laz, Jenna and Sutton.” He is a beloved figure within his community and shares his son’s charm, dry humor and charisma. After his death, he wants his son to understand that they are more alike than Laz thinks.

“Do I need to say more than the names Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy and Alexandra Roach to express my excitement about this limited series?” Coben said excitedly.

He continued with details: “Lazarus” is a story about loss, redemption – and the eternal bond between a parent and a child, even after death. It is never less than a thrill to be working with Danny Brocklehurst and Quay Street Productions again.”

The Fool Me Once team have joined forces again for the latest Amazon Prime project – as this marks the latest collaboration between Coben, Brocklehurst and Quay Street.

Coben and Brocklehurst cement a long line of collaborations having previously worked together on the Netflix series Stay Close, The Stranger, Safe and The Five.

Meanwhile, Amazon had previously aired the thriller series Shelter, based on Coben’s novel of the same name.

“Lazarus is a psychological thriller with an emotional backbone,” said Brocklehurst.

‘It’s about fathers and sons, love and loss. We tried to bring our signature humor, warmth and twists in abundance. This is the first collaboration the Quay Street team, Harlan and I have done with Amazon and we are excited to be working with them.”

Nicola Shindler and Richard Fee will executive produce through Quay Street Productions, part of ITV Studios.

Wayne Che Yip will produce and direct the first two episodes, while Matt Strevens will also produce.

Quay Street Productions and Amazon MGM Studios are producing in association with Coben’s Final Twist Productions.
