Sam Brinton was on a taxpayer-funded business trip when he stole luggage from the airport in Las Vegas

Disgraced former Department of Energy official Sam Brinton was on a taxpayer-funded business trip when they were accused of stealing luggage from an airport.

Brinton, 35, traveled to Las Vegas to the DOE-run Nevada National Security Site, according to internal department documents and expense reports.

Documents obtained by the Functional Government Initiative show that on July 6, 2022, Brinton flew on a United Airlines flight from Washington, D.C. to Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas.

Brinton, who uses the pronouns she/she, was charged with grand larceny of an item valued between $1,200 and $5,000.

Police say Brinton stole a $3,670 suitcase at the airport on the same date they traveled on official DOE business.

The stolen bag contained jewelry worth $1,700, clothing worth $850 and makeup worth $500.

In a statement to Fox News digitalFGI spokesman Peter McGinnis said: “It is outrageous that taxpayers’ money transported Brinton to and from the scene of a crime, leaving the American public unknowingly behind the wheel of the getaway car.

“The federal government clearly needs a stricter vetting process for senior positions.

“Senior officials committing petty crimes while on the job are a clear indication that something is not working properly in personnel procedures.”

The documents showed that he had traveled to the DOE’s Nevada National Security Site for an unspecified meeting and site visit.

According to the DOE, the Nevada National Security Site “is a preferred site for experimentation in support of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Nuclear Weapons Stockpile Stewardship Programs, national defense programs, and national security research, development, and training programs, as well as vital programs of other federal agencies.’

Brinton also stayed at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club on the Las Vegas strip during the trip, departing on July 9 — three days later.

An expense report filed in August 2022 shows that the total cost of the four-day trip was $1,951.50.

Brinton escaped jail time for the case after pleading no contest and was ordered to pay $3,670.74 to the victim in the case and $500 in additional costs, including a criminal fine.

Clark County Judge Ann Zimmerman imposed a 180-day suspended sentence on Brinton, a sentence that does not have to be served, and ordered Brinton to “stay out of trouble.”

In December, the DOE announced that Brinton had left the agency, but would not comment on the reason for the departure.

Biden’s former adviser also escaped jail time for another incident in which they stole another suitcase from a baggage carousel at Minneapolis-St Paul Airport on Sept. 16 — valued at $2,325.

Brinton was arrested again in May in connection with another theft, from a 2018 incident at Regan National Airport.

Brinton was released from prison in June after serving two weeks after being accused of stealing the suitcase of Tanzanian designer Asyakhamsin.

The designer and her lawyer contacted police after reading about Brinton’s other thefts and seeing photos of them carrying her stolen items.

In the most recent case, Brinton took a bag with more than “a dozen” items, the designer said.

“Asyakhamsin’s business was seriously damaged by this loss, which remained a mystery until she was recently alerted to photos of Sam Brinton carrying items from her lost luggage,” her lawyer Peter Hansen said.

Certain public images of Brinton in Asyakhamsin’s designs were widely publicized, including on Vanity Fair’s Italian website.

In February, a shocked Asyakhamsin went public with her allegations, saying her briefcase went missing at Reagan National in 2018 and she had since seen photos of Brinton wearing her custom designs.

The Houston-based fashion guru shared side-by-side photos of herself wearing one of her outfits, alongside a photo that surfaced of Brinton in what she said was the same piece of clothing.

Asyakhamsin’s luggage containing the outfits she accused Brinton of being photographed in went missing at the airport when she flew to Washington, D.C. for a fashion event in 2018.

The outfits were meant to be on display, but the designer said at the time that she was unable to participate in the event as she had hoped after her luggage went missing.
