Said Benrahma’s move to Lyon fell through after West Ham failed to complete the Transfer Matching System form correctly before the deadline.

The 28-year-old forward was set to join the Ligue 1 side after traveling to France to undergo his medical treatment at the club.

Lyon had agreed a loan fee and purchase option worth £17 million, with Pierre Sage hoping the West Ham striker would help the club climb out of the relegation zone.

However, the deal collapsed after West Ham had not completed the Transfer Matching System form correctly on Thursday evening, before the 11pm deadline.

Benrahma is furious at the outcome as he was never really keen on joining the French side.

When there is an international transfer, the buying and selling clubs must register it in the FIFA Transfer Matching System so that international clearance can be generated.

The buying club must upload all information to the system (Lyon in this case) and the selling club (West Ham in these circumstances) must match all details.

Once both clubs have completed the paperwork, they send the relevant documentation to FIFA, who checks it and then forwards it to the purchasing club’s national association.

They will then apply for the player’s registration to the selling club’s association. Once this is done, FIFA will be notified and the International Transfer Certificate will be issued.

However, the above process failed when the Hammers failed to correctly complete the Transfer Matching System form before the deadline. As a result, Benrahma’s move collapsed.

Lyon will appeal to FIFA and will release a statement on the incident that occurred late on deadline day. Meanwhile, West Ham shared the following online.

‘West Ham United can confirm that the Deadline Day deal for Saïd Benrahma to join Olympique Lyonnais was not concluded before the deadline, with a deal unable to be completed before 11pm.’

Benrahma is furious at the outcome as he was never really keen on joining the French side. The 28-year-old’s family is also stunned by the way the situation has developed.
