Sabrina Carpenter says she has to ‘tiptoe around being her authentic self’ due to trolling fears as she admits she ‘didn’t sign up’ for huge fame in the social media age

Sabrina Carpenter has revealed that she has to walk on eggshells through life because she fears internet users will label her as a “terrible person”, as she reflects on her meteoric rise in the age of social media.

The 25-year-old singer sent her fans into a frenzy by releasing her new album Short n’ Sweet on Friday. In a new interview, she opened up about how she struggles to be her “authentic” self when she’s having a bad day.

Sabrina told The guard: ‘When I was little, all I wanted to do was sing on stage and I hoped to make people happy.

‘And then you realize, especially because of the Internet, if I’m having a bad day, or I haven’t slept enough, or I haven’t had coffee, and I say something and it sounds a little sarcastic, there are a million people who can call you a horrible person.

“You have to be on your toes to be authentic and protect yourself at the same time. It’s a bit of a mental f*cking joke.”

Sabrina stressed that it was difficult growing up and becoming famous in the age of social media, but she decided that it wouldn’t affect the way she writes her music.

She added: ‘It’s not what I signed up for, but I can’t really help it when I was born. I want to be honest – I just want to write about what’s happening in my life as a 25-year-old girl. But it’s part of it and I just have to say… OK!’

Sabrina released her sixth studio album on Friday, much to the delight of fans, following reports last week that she had split from her boyfriend, Saltburn star Barry Keoghan.

It was alleged that Sabrina dumped Barry almost three weeks ago, due to the Irish star’s wild partying and acting like an ‘idiot’ when drunk.

But now according to PEOPLE Their relationship has been on and off since the Espresso creator left their relationship undescribed in an interview earlier this year.

When Rolling Stone asked her if she called Barry her boyfriend, she replied, “How can I avoid the question?”

‘The [dating] pool is the pool, and when you meet people who feel authentic and are so brilliant and wonderful in every way, that’s what you do. Obviously I write songs about exactly how I feel, so I guess I can’t be too surprised that people are interested in who and what those songs are about.’

She concluded: ‘That’s something that comes with this profession.’

It comes after a source said The sun about their alleged breakup: ‘Barry acts like an idiot when he’s drunk and Sabrina was getting more and more frustrated.’

“He’s always been a party animal and Sabrina got tired of his antics. She’s climbing the charts and putting herself first as she prepares for her tour next month.”

Barry appeared to dispel the split rumors by expressing his support for Sabrina on social media on Friday.

Fans were left devastated on Friday after gossip magazine DeuxMoi shared a tip that the duo had split.

The anonymous ‘Gossip Girl’ DeuxMoi shared on her Instagram a message she received from her: ‘Sabrina and Barry have broken up.’

But barely two hours later, Barry dismissed his concerns after liking a post of the Espresso singer in lingerie.

Sabrina shared the racy snap on Instagram as part of the promotion for her album Short n’ Sweet.

Saltburn star Barry was among the 1.6 million fans who liked the stunning photo, which shows her wearing tiny light blue knickers and a garter belt.

In June, Sabrina declared that she “fell in love for the first time” during her romance with the Oscar nominee.

Speaking with Vanity Fair She discussed her songwriting process, explaining how ‘idol’ Taylor Swift taught her to let the audience interpret the meaning of her songs: ‘I try not to explicitly tell people what a song is about.’

“People don’t always know what’s going on in someone’s head, let alone the head of a young girl experiencing love for the first time and all kinds of things.”

The singer-songwriter cleared up fan speculation that her upcoming album Short N’ Sweet might feature lyrics inspired by the actor in a recent conversation with Variety.

She also talked about what it was like for the Oscar nominee to star in her music video Please Please Please.

The Espresso singer may have disappointed fans who were hoping for a bigger insight into her relationship when she admitted she prefers to avoid topical issues in her lyrics.

“It feels easier to write about things that happened in the past, or that haven’t happened yet,” she said.

While she may gain more clarity with enough distance, it appears the delay in the songwriting process has caused some concern in the studio.

“My producers are saying I’m beating a dead horse because I’m going to write a song three years after I last spoke to the person who inspired the lyrics,” Sabrina admitted.

Despite her claims that she is focusing on things in the rearview mirror, her actor boyfriend starred in the music video for Please Please Please, which features lyrics about an actor boyfriend.

According to her, Barry was very excited about filming the music video because he was already a fan of the song.

“He loved the song. He’s obsessed with the lyrics and I’m so grateful for that,” Sabrina raved.

She also took a moment to sing Barry’s praises after several acclaimed films, including The Banshees Of Inisherin, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

“I don’t want to sound biased, but I think he’s one of the best actors of this generation,” the singer said. “So having him on screen with my song as the soundtrack made the video better and more special.”

Before his romance with Sabrina, Barry dated dental assistant Alyson Kierans for two years, with whom he has a son, Brando, who was born in August 2022 during the filming of Saltburn.
