Sabrina Carpenter dishes on whether her new album Short N’ Sweet is about boyfriend Barry Keoghan in rare comments about their relationship
She has kept her lips sealed when it comes to her high-profile relationship with actor Barry Keoghan.
But Sabrina Carpenter made a rare statement about their romance in an interview with Variety published on tuesday.
The 25-year-old singer-songwriter has debunked fan speculation that her upcoming album Short N’ Sweet would feature lyrics inspired by the Saltburn actor.
She also opened up about what it was like for the 31-year-old Oscar nominee to star in her music video for Please Please Please.
The Espresso singer may have disappointed fans who were hoping for a bigger insight into her relationship when she admitted she prefers to avoid topical issues in her lyrics.
Sabrina Carpenter, 25, made a rare statement about her relationship with Barry Keoghan in an interview with Variety published Tuesday; they will be seen at the Met Gala in Manhattan on May 6
She denied writing about the 31-year-old Oscar nominee in her lyrics because “it feels easier to write about things that happened in the past, or that haven’t happened yet”; seen on the cover of her upcoming LP Short N’ Sweet
“It feels easier to write about things that happened in the past, or that haven’t happened yet,” she said.
While she may gain more clarity with enough distance, it appears the delay in the songwriting process has caused some concern in the studio.
“My producers are saying I’m beating a dead horse because I’m going to write a song three years after I last spoke to the person who inspired the lyrics,” Sabrina admitted.
Despite her claims that she is focusing on things in the rearview mirror, her actor boyfriend starred in the music video for Please Please Please, which features lyrics about an actor boyfriend.
According to her, Barry was very excited about filming the music video because he was already a fan of the song.
“He loved the song. He’s obsessed with the lyrics and I’m so grateful for that,” Sabrina raved.
She also took a moment to sing Barry’s praises after several acclaimed films, including The Banshees Of Inisherin, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
“I don’t want to sound biased, but I think he’s one of the best actors of this generation,” the singer said. “So having him on screen with my song as the soundtrack made the video better and more special.”

Sabrina and Barry met in September at the Givenchy show at Paris Fashion Week, but they didn’t start dating until December when they were spotted on a date in Brentwood
Earlier this summer, Sabrina and Barry took their relationship to the next level with their red carpet debut at the Met Gala on May 6.
The lovebirds first met at the Givenchy fashion presentation for Paris Fashion Week in September.
However, the two weren’t linked until late last year, when they were spotted on a date in Los Angeles’s posh Brentwood neighborhood in early December.
Before his romance with Sabrina, Barry dated dental assistant Alyson Kierans for two years, with whom he has a son, Brando, who was born in August 2022 during the filming of Saltburn.
