Shane Lowry reflects on his draw against Jordan Spieth and what it took from Team Europe to achieve Ryder Cup victory

Shane Lowry believes Team Europe would “be remembered forever” if they can retain the Ryder Cup in the United States in 2025.

Lowry was part of the team that defeated 16.5-11.5 in Rome last week. He won a full point with Sepp Straka in Friday’s foursomes – which Europe won 4-0 – and then added half a point by halving his singles match against Jordan Spieth. on Sunday.

Europe’s win was their seventh home victory in a row – the US’s last overseas success came at The Belfry in 1993 – but they were badly beaten on their last two trips to the United States, being beaten 17-11 at Hazeltine in 2016 and then slumped to a record 19-9 loss at Whistling Straits in 2021.

The next Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black in New York in September 2025.

Shane Lowry was one of the stars on Sunday as Team Europe defeated Team USA to win the Ryder Cup.

Lowry told it Sky Sports News: “The home court advantage is huge, but it is a huge opportunity and something we would probably be remembered for forever if we went to Bethpage and retained the trophy.

“It’s something I’ll be thinking about for the next two years and I’m sure the 11 guys who are with me in Rome (too).

“There’s a good chance it won’t be the same team, but I hope I’m one of those 12 players. If those players were to retain the trophy it would be a huge achievement.”

“I think this is a new generation (for Europe). You have Ludvig Åberg, Nicolai Hojgaard, Nicolai’s brother Rasmus, Vincent Norrman, Adrian Meronk.

“All these young European players doing great things and could be there for the next 10, 15, 20 years. It’s exciting for European golf and could be a successful generation.”

Shane Lowry claims all Team Europe players would be happy if Luke Donald decided to take on the captaincy for the trip to Bethpage in 2025.

Ryder Cup veterans Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia were not in Rome, having defected to LIV Golf and resigned from the DP World Tour.

Lowry believes that the absence of these players has allowed Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland, as well as himself, to take on a bigger role.

The Irishman added: “I have huge respect for what the guys who went to LIV, who weren’t there last week but have been there for the last 20, 30 years, have done for golf in Europe.

“But because those big personalities and big egos weren’t in the team room, Rory, Jon and Viktor, and maybe myself, could be someone else.”

Lowry was speaking to promote TGL, a new team golf league launching in January 2024, with events played on a virtual course and held on weekday evenings around the regular PGA Tour season.

The 36-year-old said: “I think it will be fun and appeal to a different audience than what regular golf tournaments do because of the time of night. There will also be a certain amount of competition surrounding it.

“The days of seasons with 45 events and four regular stroke play events are dwindling a bit. We need to captivate a new and different audience.

“This is going to do that. Hopefully it will grow the game.”
