Ryder Cup 2023 LIVE: Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood lead out unchanged Team Europe on day two as they look to build on their commanding lead
Zach Johnson revealed during a press conference on Friday that the American team was battling a disease virus in camp.
Yesterday was a brutal day for the Americans in Rome, suffering a 4-0 whitewash in the opening session before subsequently failing to win a match in the fourball.
But there may have been a reason for their slow start, with Johnson revealing there may have been an illness in camp yesterday.
“There have been some unforeseen things that we’ve had to navigate around, which is very unfortunate, in a health sense,” the U.S. team captain said Friday.
“It’s not an excuse because we have depth, but I just want to say, I’m grateful that we have a team doctor.
He added: “We’re just fighting, I mean, internally. It’s kind of passed on, caddies, players.
‘It is what it is. But it’s nothing more than that. Boys fight and play anyway. I mean, it’s not something that weighs heavily on us because of the depth that we have and because of the many options that we think we have.”
The Ryder Cup is golf’s pinnacle, with its 44th edition taking place at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club on the outskirts of Rome, but Team USA collapsed on the opening day.
