Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds has lifted the lid on filming the club’s documentary and endured a whole new level of stress as the team was promoted.

The Hollywood actor along with co-owner and screen star Rob McElhenney got their Hollywood end in the most recent season when their non-league football team won the National League title and moved back to the Football League after 15 years.

The pair burst into tears as they watched their Welsh side beat Boreham Wood 3-1 to clinch the Championship and seal promotion to England’s Tier 4.

Success came after falling short in their first season since taking over fifth tier Wrexham in February 2021 after a $2.76 million deal.

Reynolds and McElhenney are candid about their experiences with the club Variety’s Emmy Extra Edition where they appeared as the cover stars.

I don’t think I’ve ever felt the fear like this [at the end of the 2022-23 season]. It wasn’t fun for me,” Reynolds told the magazine as he addressed their recent triumph.

“It was hell going into the Notts County game this year, hell really. That the team managed to pull it out at the last second was so perfect Wrexham.’

They witnessed a thrilling 3-2 victory over rivals Notts County at Wrexham’s home, the Racecourse Ground, in April.

The game was 2-2 before Elliot Lee struck in the 78th minute. With Wrexham leading 3–2, former England goalkeeper Ben Foster saved an injury time penalty to spark wild celebration.

“Wrexham always finds a way to string together the drama until you’re completely convinced that your heart has beaten its last beat,” Reynolds continued.

“There’s that football phrase Rob taught me: “Squeaky bum time.” I totally understand squeaky bum time now.”

Wrexham sealed promotion 10 days later, sparking more pandemonium. They achieved a historic season with 111 points.

Jubilant supporters immediately poured onto the pitch before thousands took to the streets to celebrate the team in an open-top bus parade. Reynolds and McElhenney then treated the stars to an all-expenses-paid four-day trip to Las Vegas.

The club initially gained international fame through FX’s ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary, in which he went behind the scenes and charted the fate of the side following the celebrity purchase.

Deadpool actor Reynolds admitted that he “struggled” filming the series at first.

He revealed that shooting a docuseries was completely different from anything he had done before.

“The truth is, we didn’t know anything when we went in,” Reynolds told Vanity.

“I had a really hard time at the beginning. There’s a point in the series where I joke that I didn’t know I had the option of not being on camera all the time.”
