‘Good luck… but not too much!’: Ryan Reynolds and Rob McIlhenny record hilarious video for Wales fans ahead of their World Cup match with the USA – as the Hollywood pair are owned by Welsh team Wrexham AFC, dividing their loyalties

Actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McIlhenny have wished Wales fans the best of luck in a hilarious video ahead of the team’s opening match against the USA, with the Hollywood couple’s allegiances divided over their co-ownership of Welsh side Wrexham.

“Hello, this is Ryan Reynolds. I just wanted to send my best wishes to the entire Welsh football club [sic] on his way to Qatar to participate in the World Cup,” the Canadian-American actor told fans from his car.

‘I’m actually sitting here with my best friend and my co-pilot from Wrexham FC, Mr Rob McIlhenny.’

“Hey, how are you,” said McIlhenny, known for his role as Ronald “Mac” McDonald on the American comedy series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. “I just wanted to say good luck. Not too lucky. I mean, maybe a tie. A draw would be nice, play your heart out…’

‘We’re driving to Qatar’: Reynolds and McIlhenny joked that they would be driving to Doha, which is 72 hours from Wrexham. The ride also consists of crossing 12 countries

Reynolds then interrupts his Hollywood friend by taking the phone from him and adding, “I’m so sorry about him.” Crush all your enemies, drink the blood of your enemies.’

“Rob and I are actually in the car right now because we’re driving to Qatar,” says the Deadpool actor as a joke. The journey from Wrexham to Doha would take exactly three days and pass through countless countries to get there.

“We’re on our way to Qatar,” McIlhenny reaffirms, restraining himself from laughing too hard at Reynolds’ joke. “Play your heart out guys.”

Reynolds returns the phone’s focus to himself and says, “Go get them.”

“Not too hard, but not too hard either,” McIlhenny emphasises.

Reynolds raises his eyebrows as he shakes his head and tells the Welsh team to “go too hard” on the Star and Stripes.

The USMNT is the second youngest team in the tournament with players like Weston McKennie from Juventus, Christian Pulisic from Chelsea or Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson from Leeds United.

Wales will look to call on talisman Gareth Bale, who currently plays for LAFC following his move from Real Madrid in the summer.

Kickoff time for Tuesday’s game is set for 2:00 PM ET
