Ryan Gosling, 42, laughs off claims he is too OLD to play Ken in the new Barbie movie

Ryan Gosling laughed when told he’s “too old” to play Ken in the new Barbie movie.

The 42-year-old Hollywood star will portray standard Ken alongside Margot Robbie in the upcoming live-action film based on the Mattel doll as “stereotypical” Barbie.

And the Drive star insists no one even cared about Ken before he was revealed as the actor who played him, saying his story needs to be told.

He told GK: “I would say, you know, if people don’t want to play with my Ken, there are a lot of other Kens to play with.

“It’s funny, this kind of pearl-grabbing idea from #notmyken, for example. Like you ever thought of Ken before this?’

Ryan then shared, “And everyone was fine with that, that he had a job that sucks. But suddenly it’s like, “No, we’ve been caring about Ken all along.”

He argued that before, people didn’t care about Ken.

‘No you did not. You never did. You never cared. Barbie never fucks with Ken.

‘That is the point. If you ever really cared about Ken, you’d know that no one cared about Ken. So your hypocrisy is exposed. That’s why his story needs to be told.

“I care about this guy now. I am like his representative. “Ken couldn’t show up to collect this award so I’m here to collect it for him,” Ryan joked.

It was his young daughters playing with a Ken doll that made him realize it was a story that needed to be shared.

Ryan added, “I saw him face down in the mud outside one day, next to a crushed lemon, and it was like, ‘This man’s story needs to be told,’ you know?”

The film, which hits theaters July 21, features multiple versions of Barbie and Ken.

He also spoke to GQ about children.

Gosling, a former Disney star, began a relationship with Mendes, 49, after the pair played troubled lovers in the critically acclaimed 2012 drama The Place Beyond The Pines.

The role was a personal turning point for Gosling, and he admits the prospect of parenthood didn’t cross his mind until he met the Latina actress, who is seven years his senior.

“I didn’t think about kids before I met her, but after I met Eva, I realized I just didn’t want to have kids without her,” he recalls.

“And there were times on The Place Beyond the Pines where we pretended to be a family, and I didn’t really want it to pretend anymore. I realized that this would be a life I would be very happy with.’

The couple’s first child, Esmeralda, was born in 2014, with Amada following two years later as Gosling’s career peaked with starring roles in the musical epic La La Land and the comedy crime drama The Nice Guys.

The following year, he would play legendary astronaut Neil Armstrong in the biopic First Man before putting his career aside to spend more time with his family — a decision that he admits changed his attitude toward work.

“I treat it more like work now, and not like, you know, therapy,” he said. “It’s a job and I think in a way that I can get better at it because there’s less interference.”

Barbie, Gosling’s second film since returning to the movie industry, represents his biggest step into the mainstream, but the actor’s casting as the youthful 42-year-old Ken has raised questioning eyebrows among fans of the franchise.
