Ryan Giggs made a rare public appearance on Good Friday to watch Salford City from the stands.

The 49-year-old former winger of Manchester United and Wales saw the club he part-owns take on League Two side Leyton Orient.

Giggs is one of many Manchester United legends of the late 1990s and early 2000s to hold a 10 per cent stake in Salford City following their takeover of the team in 2014.

Nicky Butt, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes also bought into League Two nine years ago, while David Beckham bought a stake from Singaporean businessman Peter Lim in 2019.

However, the match was not a good one for Salford City. The visitors won 2-0 with goals from Ruel Sotiriou and George Moncur in the first half.

Giggs is currently awaiting a new trial over domestic violence allegations against his ex-girlfriend and her younger sister. He has denied the allegations.

The former Wales coach is accused of assaulting Kate Greville and her sister Emma in an alcohol-fueled altercation at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester.

He is also accused of coercive and controlling behavior towards his ex-girlfriend for three years.

An initial three-week trial in August 2022 resulted in the jury being unable to reach a verdict on any of the charges.

In a statement at the time, Giggs said: “After more than three weeks in court, I am clearly disappointed that a new trial has been ordered.

My plea of not guilty remains on all charges. I am confident that justice will eventually be served and my name will be cleared of all wrongdoing.

“I would like to thank my legal team, my mother, my children, my friend Zara and my closest friends for their support during this time.

“I understand the interest and attention in this matter, but I would ask that my and my family’s privacy be respected in the coming weeks and months.”

The new trial is expected to begin on July 31.
