Ruud van Nistelrooy believes his short spell as Manchester United boss was the springboard he needed to land his first job as a Premier League manager.

The Dutchman has taken over from Leicester and will be in the dugout for the first time on Tuesday when the Foxes take on West Ham at the King Power Stadium.

Van Nistelrooy was told he was not needed by new United boss Ruben Amorim, but has used his time as interim leader to catapult himself into the frame for other leading roles. In addition to Leicester, Van Nistelrooy attracted interest from his former club Hamburg and an unnamed Italian club.

He said: “What happened after the games at United and the amount of interest, the options that were suddenly there for me and the options that presented themselves, I was a bit surprised.

‘It was four games. I spent a whole season at PSV Eindhoven and was able to win two cups. I have coached at Under-19 level and was part of the Dutch national team staff, but the football world has never had this reaction.

‘It provoked these reactions and I was just happy about that. I was able to talk to different parties and come to a decision that felt very good to me. I’m happy to be here.’
