Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed sobs as she is sentenced to 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins
Hannah Guttierez-Reed, the main arms dealer on the set of the ill-fated indie film Rust, was sentenced Monday to 18 months in prison for the fatal on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
The young gunsmith cried as her fate was read to her in court today by a judge who reprimanded her for her apparent lack of remorse.
“Your attorney had to tell the court that you were remorseful,” Judge Mary Marlow Sommer said.
Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by a jury in March, making her the first crew member convicted in the accidental death of Hutchins by 66-year-old actor Alec Baldwin.
Gutierrez-Reed, 27, was found guilty after a jury determined she accidentally loaded a bullet into a revolver Baldwin used on set.
Baldwin’s criminal trial is set to begin July 10, after a grand jury indicted him on involuntary manslaughter charges in January.

The aspiring gun professional, the stepdaughter of Thell Reed – an esteemed Hollywood firearms trainer – was sentenced by New Mexico District Court Judge Sommer.
Attorneys for Gutierrez-Reed requested that she be placed on probation, but prosecutors argued for the 18 months due to the suspect’s apparent lack of remorse.
Judge Sommer sided with prosecutors and imposed the full recommended sentence on Gutierrez-Reed after it was pointed out that she had called jurors “idiots” and said the judge had been “paid off” during phone calls she made from jail .
She also continued to blame Baldwin and others on set and the production team for the shooting.
After her conviction last month, she spent a month in Sante Fe prison.
After her sentence was handed down, the judge said: ‘You were the gunsmith who stood between a safe weapon and a weapon that could kill someone. For you she would still be alive.’
Gutierrez-Reed, who appeared today in a khaki prison look, wiped away tears as Hutchins’ former agent Craig Mizrahi read the court a victim impact statement, as did director Joel Souza – who was also shot on set – and Hutchins’ grieving mother.
Her mother, Olga Solovey, who lives in Ukraine and made her statement via a pre-recorded video with subtitles, cried during her speech and said: “The day of her death ruined my whole life. It’s heartbreaking to see her child growing up without his mother.”
She said that when Matt, Halyna’s husband, called to say she was dead, “I screamed and kept begging him.” Time doesn’t heal. It’s been two and a half years now and it’s getting worse.’
One of Hutchins’ closest friends told the court: ‘The last four words she ever said to me [were] ‘I believe in you.’ Those four words will forever resonate in my soul.”
The judge said the Rust gun guard received the length of her sentence because she showed no remorse

Alec Baldwin, who left his apartment building here with his wife Hilaria last month, will be prosecuted in July for the shooting of Hutchins. He has consistently maintained his innocence, but Guttierez-Reed’s attorneys claim the environment he created on set led to Hutchins’ death
Hutchins was accidentally shot and killed during filming on the set of Rust in October 2021 when Alec Baldwin was practicing with a pistol with fired live ammunition, under the responsibility of Gutierrez-Reed.
Prosecutors said Gutierrez-Reed wants Baldwin, who fired the gun that killed Hutchins, to also go to jail and refuse to testify at his upcoming trial because “she shouldn’t be subpoenaed if Baldwin doesn’t show up for her.”

During her two-week trial, which concluded last month, Gutierrez-Reed was blamed for brining live ammunition on the Rust set where it should never have been.
She was accused of not following basic gun safety protocol, one of the key tenets of her role on set.
After a deliberation that lasted less than two hours, a jury in Santa Fe found her guilty on March 6.
During the preceding three-week trial, prosecutors argued that Gutierrez-Reed had unknowingly brought live Colt .45 bullets to the set in New Mexico, something that has now been allowed by SAG safety guidelines for nearly 100 years.
The young professional’s lawyer, Jason Bowles, argued that his client was a scapegoat for a disorganized production in which she was not given time to do her job properly.
He blamed Huthchins’ tragic death on the reckless and unscripted use of firearms by the film’s star, Baldwin, in addition to his efforts as a producer to rush the film’s production.
Baldwin has denied pulling the trigger and said he was instructed to point the gun at the camera. The FBI and private firearms experts determined that the gun would not have fired if the trigger had not been pulled.
He has repeatedly tried to have the charges against him dropped, most recently in the immediate aftermath of Guttierez-Reed’s guilty verdict.

Bowles also stated that due to the high-profile nature of the case, Guttierez-Reed “will continue to suffer collateral consequences far more severe than most defendants will ever face.” He previously announced plans to appeal the conviction and sentence.
He also said his client has received death threats and has entered therapy.
In July, prosecutors will argue that Baldwin, who produced the doomed film, is partly responsible for Hutchins’ tragic end.
They said that in the weeks leading up to the shooting, he was unable to regulate his emotions, pressured crews to work quickly and “routinely compromised safety.”
