Russian missiles destroyed a humanitarian convoy in southern Ukraine today, killing at least 23 civilians.

Missiles hit a line of cars driving from the Ukrainian-occupied city of Zaporizhzhya to nearby Russian-occupied territory in the early morning of Friday.

Oleksandr Starukh, the regional governor of Zaporizhzhya, said at least 28 people were also injured in the strike and all the victims were civilians.

The attack took place hours before a speech by Vladimir Putin in which he will announce that the Zaporizhzhya region, along with Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson, will be annexed to Russia under the guise of protection.

Russian missiles hit a civilian convoy en route from the Ukrainian-occupied city of Zaporizhzhya to nearby Russian-occupied territory, killing at least 23 people.

Photos from Zaporizhzhya showed a road littered with blown-out cars and at least two bodies lying on the ground as survivors forced their way through the rubble.

A witness reported seeing about 12 bodies, four of them in cars, and said a rocket had left a crater in the ground near two rows of vehicles at a car market.

The impact had thrown chunks of dirt into the air and sprayed the vehicles with shrapnel. The windows of the vehicles, mainly cars and three vans, were blown out.

The vehicles were packed with belongings, blankets and suitcases.

In one, the body of a man had reclined from the driver’s seat into the passenger’s seat, his left hand still clutching the steering wheel.

Oleksandr Starukh, governor of Zaporizhzhya, wrote on Telegram: ‘The enemy launched a rocket attack on a civilian humanitarian convoy on its way out of the regional center.

“People were queuing up to leave for the temporarily occupied territory, pick up their relatives, get help.

“Rescue workers, medics and all relevant services are currently working on the site.”
