Russia will be excluded from Euro 2024, as the country is still isolated from international sport due to the war in Ukraine.

The country has been suspended from UEFA and FIFA competitions since Vladimir Putin’s army invaded Ukraine in February and is now banned from qualifying for the competition.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected an appeal from Russia against the ban in July.

UEFA confirmed on Tuesday that Russia will not participate in the qualifying draw, which will take place on October 9 in Frankfurt. Host country Germany automatically qualifies for the tournament.

A UEFA statement read: “All Russian teams are currently suspended following the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee of 28 February 2022, which was further confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 15 July 2022.

“Russia is therefore not participating in the qualifying draw of the UEFA European Championship 2022-24.”

However, UEFA has confirmed that Belarus, which allied with Russia during their invasion of Ukraine, will be included in the qualifying draw at this stage.

UEFA has banned both the Russian national team from playing in official matches and all Russian clubs from participating in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League this season.

Due to the exclusion of Russia and the automatic qualification of Germany, the 53 remaining countries will be divided into seven groups of five teams and three groups of six teams.

The 10 group winners and 10 runners-up will advance to the final, while the remaining three places will be decided via play-offs to be played in March 2024.

The 53 countries involved will be classified according to the overall ranking of the UEFA Nations League 2022-2023 and will be divided into seven pots.

It came as UEFA fined and issued a warning to Ukraine national team coach Oleksandr Petrakov after saying he was ready to shoot invading Russian soldiers in Kiev.

Petrakov, 65, told the Guardian in April that “if they come to Kiev, I will grab a weapon and defend my city,” adding: “I think I can take out two or three enemies.”

It led the Russian Football Union to write to UEFA that Petrakov was accused of discriminating against their country and not remain politically neutral, and called for a suspension.

But in a Facebook post, the head of the Football Federation of Ukraine, Andrii Pavelko, wrote that UEFA simply warned Petrakov and handed out a small fine, which the organization paid on his behalf.
