Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has been ruled out of his team’s critical AFC matchup with the New York Jets on Sunday.
Wilson has been under a cloud all week after injuring his hamstring in Denver’s loss to the LA Chargers.
ESPNs Adam Schefter reported that Wilson had wanted to play but was stopped by head coach Nathaniel Hackett, who earlier this week said he would have the final say.
Backup Brett Rypien starts as quarterback for the struggling Broncos who must beat a resurgent New York Jets outfit if they are to compete for a playoff spot.
Russell Wilson has failed to inspire since his arrival in Denver, with the AFC team currently at 2-3
As for Wilson’s immediate future, Schefter added that the Broncos buyers will reassess Wilson’s potential availability in the coming days ahead of the team’s trip to London to face Jacksonville.
Rypien has made one start in the NFL, ironically against the Jets on Thursday Night Football in 2020.
Denver hopes Rypien can repeat the feat with the AFC West team currently tied at 2-4, two games behind the league-leader Kansas City Chiefs.
While Wilson has been disappointing to say the least this season, it’s a big blow to a Broncos offense that hasn’t fired a shot in six weeks.
The former Seahawks star has thrown just five touchdowns and three interceptions this season
Only once have the Broncos scored more than 20 points – in a loss to the otherwise scoreless Las Vegas Raiders.
Denver has remained a live opportunity in each of its six games this season thanks to a phenomenal defense.
However, the 2-4 Broncos are in last place in points per game (15.2), astonishingly below those of Chicago, Carolina and Houston.
Wilson is often a viral sensation within the social media world because of his unique personality
