Russell Crowe shocks with new career move as he plays surprise gigs in Sydney

Russell Crowe shows his skills in a new arena.

The actor, who is also a talented musician, performed three surprise shows in Sydney this weekend in a very different genre to the rock and pop gigs he normally plays.

Crowe, 59, ditched his famous Indoor Garden Party band for a solo jazz performance at Restaurant Hubert in the CBD.

He sang accompanied by the jazz band Restaurant Hubert – consisting of Stu Hunter on piano, James Hazelwood on bass and Calvin Welch on drums.

“Three drop-in shows at the Hubert Jazz club and restaurant last weekend,” Crowe shared on his Twitter account.

'No announcement, no intro, just get up and go. Pleasure.'

Several fans were surprised by his jazz performance and commented on the man of many talents.

'You play jazz well. I didn't know that,” one user wrote.

“This is such a high level of creativity and process. I just love this kind of unexpected artistry. So cool!' added another.

Despite his successful acting career, Crowe has always had an interest in singing.

The New Zealand-born rocker released his first solo single I Want to Be Like Marlon Brando in the 1980s, before launching his first band Roman Anti with childhood friend Dean Cochran.

The rocker previously spoke about his love for music in an interview with The Sunday Telegraphinsisting he won't stop singing no matter what critics say.

“When I became all popular and famous for my acting, the critics said 'stay in your lane' and all that – but what's your lane?” said the Gladiator star.

Russell Crowe recently slammed his rock band's critics who say the Hollywood star should “stay the course” and stick to acting. Russell photographed a performance with The Ordinary Fear of God on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 2006

“The reality is that music has always been so important to me, and even though I don't talk about it all the time, it coincides with everything I do creatively.”

Although the band has evolved since then and changed names several times, Russell said he has always been the main creative force behind the music.

'The songs are influenced by my life experiences, where sometimes I play a certain role, but mostly they are just things I am processing. Life, love, a book I read,” the Cinderella Man actor explained.

In 1992, the band was renamed 30 Odd Foot of Grunt and welcomed bassist Garth Adam, drummer Dave Kelly, guitarist Dave Wilkins and trumpeter Stewart Kirwan.

Russell sang lead vocals while Dean played guitar.

The band would later evolve thanks to the addition of Canadian musician Alan Doyle, and in 2009 the name was renamed The Ordinary Fear of God.

Since then, a slew of musicians have rotated through the band, including Russell's ex-wife Danielle Spencer, who provided vocals for his 2011 album The Crowe/Doyle Songbook Vol III.
