Russell Crowe reveals he would love to play Australia’s prime minister in a movie – and explains why the country is ‘lucky’ to have Anthony Albanese as its leader

Russell Crowe has revealed he would love to play an Australian Prime Minister in a biopic.

The New Zealand-born, Australian-raised actor, 59, shared Erin Molan from Sky News Australia he would like to bring the life of Gough Whitlam to the big screen.

‘I think he was one of Australia’s greatest statesmen. I think he put things in place that give us the confidence we have as a nation today,” he said.

Crowe praised Whitlam’s purchase of Jackson Pollock’s painting Blue Poles, which he acquired for the National Gallery of Australia in 1973 for what was a record price at the time – $1.3 million.

“You know, little decisions he made, like buying blue poles, the painting. And everyone at the time berated him and called him irresponsible,” Crowe said.

“That painting is now worth $500 million or something… any government decision should have that result. You know, you get a multiple of 500 of every dollar you spend and we’re good.’

Australian Labor Party leader Gough Whitlam was Australia’s 21st Prime Minister, serving from 1972 to 1975.

The Gladiator star went on to say that the country is “lucky” to now have Anthony Albanese as its leader, whom he sees as a down-to-earth man.

The pair have known each other for 20 years through the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league club, which the actor co-owns.

“He always showed up. When there was something big going on for the club and we wanted his presence, he always showed up,” said Crowe.

“And he kept track of his own membership, and he buys his own tickets. You know, that shows the quality of the man to me.’

It comes after Russell revealed who he would never play in a movie – former US President Donald Trump.

The actor was discussing his new movie The Pope’s Exorcist on Channel Seven’s Sunrise when host Natalie Barr asked him if he would ever play Trump in a movie.

Donald Trump is the story of the day. Would you think of playing him in the future? I don’t think you’ve played it yet, Russell,’ Natalie asked.

The Robin Hood star avoided answering the question and checked his watch.

“I’ve got lots of things to do,” Russell replied jokingly.
