RUBY WALSH’S TOP FIVE: The former jockey backs Velvet Elvis to win the Grand National over Corach Rambler and Fury Road…despite citing Any Second Now as one to watch

  • Ruby Walsh backs Le Milos to win the Grand National on Saturday afternoon
  • He supports Le Milos over Velvet Elvis, Corach Rambler and Fury Road
  • Walsh won the Grand National twice, was second once and third once

Ruby Walsh is backing Le Milos to win the Grand National on Saturday afternoon, claiming the eight-year-old will beat the likes of Velvet Elvis, Any Second Now, Corach Rambler and Fury Road.

The 2023 Grand National takes place at Aintree at 5.15pm on Saturday afternoon and former jockey has revealed who he is supporting to win the prestigious Steeplechase.

Walsh — who won the Grand National twice (2000, 2005), finished second once (2006) and finished third once (2009) — has named his top five for this weekend’s event.

Speak against Paddy powerWalsh said, “I kind of shot myself in the foot here. Realistically, I don’t think Any Second Now can win the race, but I tipped him.

“But he’s a one-way ticket, so take that as a bet. But I do think he is handicapped to win it.

“So when it comes to choosing my five, I have to be more realistic and pick horses that are ahead of the handicap.

So I’m going with Velvet Elvis, Le Milos, Corach Rambler, Fury Road and Any Second Now. Then there’s the matter of the order in which I put them.’

Walsh ended by saying, “I think Le Milos Velvet will beat Elvis. Then Every Second Now, Corach Rambler and Fury Road.’

An estimated 150,000 people will visit Aintree Racecourse all weekend in excitement, dread and elation, and millions more will tune in from afar for the world’s most famous steeplechase.

Walsh compared the atmosphere at Aintree to that of a Premier League football ground, claiming that ‘you almost feel like you’re walking onto the pitch in one of those great stadiums’.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Walsh said: ‘It’s such a big day, such a huge crowd, such a build-up and such an atmosphere. It is a special day for jockeys to participate.

“Most of the people who drive it are professional athletes, and performing on stage, almost like a Premier League footballer or international rugby player in front of 70,000 people, you don’t do that very often.

“When you get to race in the Grand National, you almost feel like you’re walking onto the field in one of those great stadiums, and it’s a special feeling to be a part of that.”
