A young woman trying to fit in discovers that she is much more than your average teenager in Ruby Gilman’s new trailer, Teenage Kraken.

Universal Pictures, which also has the Super Mario Bros. movie coming this summer, will release the animated adventure in theaters on June 30 (via Deadline).

Lana Condor voices the main character, a young high school student who has been forbidden from the water by her mother (Toni Collette).

When she finally breaks her mother’s most important rule, she discovers that she is a direct descendant of the Kraken warrior queens and that she will inherit the throne from her grandmother (Jane Fonda).

Ruby must juggle all of this as she tries to deal with her crush (Jaboukie Young-White) and a new girl at school who turns out to be a mermaid (Annie Murphy).

The trailer opens with Fonda stating, “The ocean is a mysterious world. Humans know more about the surface of Mars than they do about the ocean floor.

And the sea creatures that live there? Well, even the ones you have imagined, you have imagined wrongly,’ she clarifies.

She adds, “Take the mighty, giant Kraken, bloodthirsty, ship-sinking monster, where do you get this?”

“Krakens are majestic creatures and noble protectors,” he adds, as we watch Ruby getting ready for her day and on her way to school.

“I’m just Ruby Gilman, a normal teenager,” Ruby says, as her grandmother says. “For generations, the krakens have protected the sea and kept us safe from the most dangerous and power-hungry creature of all,” says Fonda, as Ruby replies, ‘The mermaid?’

The trailer then cuts to Ruby’s school, where new mermaid Chelsea (Annie Murphy) reacts to praise from other students around her.

Ruby tells her grandmother, ‘But people love mermaids,’ while a girl tells Chelsea, ‘I love you!’ and Chelsea replies, ‘I love you too, rando.’

‘Of course they do. People are dumb,’ Grandma says, adding, ‘Mermaids are selfish, vain narcissists, the worst of all.’

“No matter what the challenge, a kraken will always answer the call,” Grandma says as we see Ruby transform into a huge kraken as well.

“It’s time to go big,” Ruby says as we see her showdown with Chelsea as the trailer draws to a close.
