Ruben Amorim may be on his way to Manchester United, but if Friday night’s performance is anything to go by, he’ll certainly leave the Sporting fans with some parting gifts.
His side defeated Estrela Amadora 5-1 in Lisbon, with Viktor Gyokeres dismantling the defense with four goals in a stunning performance to maintain the Portuguese champions’ perfect start.
Maximiliano Araujo scored the fifth goal for the hosts in the 85th minute, while Rodrigo Pinho scored for Estrela Amadora in the first half, but Sporting simply had too much to deal with.
Gyokeres’ first goal came in the 19th minute, taking advantage of a loose deflection in the penalty area to the left, before cutting inside and curling past Estrela Amadora goalkeeper Bruno.
His second – twelve minutes later – was a powerful right-foot strike into the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area after intelligently avoiding the offside trap.
Viktor Gyokeres scored four times in Ruben Amorim’s first game since being announced as Man United’s new boss
Amorim was confirmed as Man United’s new head coach earlier on Friday after a week-long pursuit
And just before half-time, the Swedish striker signed from Coventry City, completing his hat-trick in 23 minutes with a penalty, confidently converted.
Unsurprisingly, given the result, Amorim’s side put on a confident show in front of the Sporting crowd, who waved goodbye to their boss.
With 20 shots and 65 percent of the ball, it was perhaps a display that could excite watching Manchester United fans.
Gyokeres was even asked if he would join Amorim at Old Trafford soon, to which he replied: ‘I don’t know. I’m here, and as you can see, I’m enjoying it.’
He added: ‘Sad to see Amorim leave, he did a great job here, we will do the same job and keep the same confidence in the team. We all wish him the best.”
