It was recently rumored that Nvidia’s RTX 5080 would launch before the RTX 5090, and we’ve just heard more about Team Green’s potential release schedule later this year, meaning this pair of GPUs could be close together.
VideoCardz can be credited with the spot on this one, noting that Kopite7kimi’s previous comment on X (formerly Twitter) was recently replied to by another leaker, AGF.
To be precise, they must be announced at the same time, with an interval of several weeks for availabilityMay 9, 2024
As you can see, AGF clarifies that while the proposed launch is indeed for the RTX 5080, followed by the RTX 5090 – if you season that statement of course, and this new one at that – the timing difference is only a small will be a difference. several weeks.
And if this is the path Nvidia wants to take with its next generation of Blackwell GPUs, it makes more sense to us, as we’ll discuss next.
Analysis: Echoes of Ampere
If you remember, when the first rumor about the RTX 5080 first aired, we were skeptical about the idea. Much of our caution in this regard revolved around the suggestion that Nvidia might delay the RTX 5090 for some time after the 5080. (Based on the possible reason why Nvidia would supposedly launch these GPUs in this order as discussed at the time – some of which is wrapped up in the production of next-generation AI GPUs).
Anyway, as we noted at the time, with Ampere – the generation before the current Lovelace models – Nvidia actually launched the RTX 3080 before the 3090, but there was very little in it (a week or so – and both GPUs were unveiled at the same time) .
So the suggestion here is that this will be the same deal with the RTX 5080 and 5090, with a joint reveal and the on-sale dates being just a few weeks apart. This idea is easier to accept, as this is actually very close to a simultaneous launch, which seems more likely to happen – rather than the RTX 5080 being the vanguard, so to speak, to gauge customer reception.
It also reflects speculation that we’ll see two Blackwell GPUs in 2024, both the RTX 5090 and 5080, which has been a rumor for a while (with some dissent lately). If that’s the case, though, some doubts and concerns remain – particularly about how Nvidia will ramp up production for two GeForce Blackwell gaming graphics cards, given the much more profitable next-generation AI GPUs (also Blackwell) that will be produced. a priority.
There’s already been some talk surrounding the initial RTX 5000 debut, whatever form it may come in, because it’s a ‘paper’ launch, meaning there’s not a lot of stock behind it. In other words, this might be more about PR and putting a stamp on our list of the best graphics cards – and blowing away AMD’s RDNA 4 cards – at least for starters, before more production of Blackwell GPUs stepped up.
