Royal Queensland Show: Peter Dutton is confronted about THOSE photos of him eating a Dagwood dog

>

Peter Dutton has explained his unfortunate technique for eating a Dagwood dog at a family fair after pictures of him chowing down on the sausage went viral.

The Liberal leader said he didn’t want the sauce to drip on his face so decided to eat the snack from the top down with a wide bite.

He also had Bill Shorten’s 2016 disaster in his mind after the former Labor leader was slammed for eating a sausage roll from the side.

‘With the cameras there, I mean you can’t eat it from the side like Bill Shorten because the sauce drips off, so it leaves one angle and it’s not a great one,’ Mr Dutton told 2Day FM on Thursday.

‘I tried to eat the hotdog on an angle but the problem is there is no good angle.

‘So you just accept your fate right.’

He added: ‘You’ve got deal with the sauce because the next photo of course is sauce all over your face which is an equally bad look.’

The Opposition Leader said that after the pictures were posted online, his phone immediately lit up with text messages.

‘Most of my mates actually were pretty rapid-fire texting me like, ”WTF”, but anyway, what do you do,’ he said.

The former police officer and defence minister enjoyed the tomato-sauce covered sausage in Brisbane as he visited the Royal Queensland Show on Wednesday.

He was snapped holding three of the famous snacks before wolfing into one and heading off to play carnival games.

Mr Dutton is just the latest politician to be pictured eating in front of the cameras.

Ex-PM Malcom Turnbull was famously captured eating a meat pie with a knife and fork while Tony Abbott was seen biting into a raw onion.

Mr Dutton previously revealed he will show a softer, more caring side to his personality after taking the reigns of the Liberals in the wake the party’s disastrous election loss in May.

He said that while the public had grown accustomed to seeing him in ‘tough portfolios’ like defence and home affairs, he hoped to show them he’s also a family man.

‘I hope now, in moving from such tough portfolios, the Australian public can see the rest of my character, the side my family, friends and colleagues see,’ he said recently.

‘The side my community sees where they have elected me eight times. I come from the suburbs and I have never changed my values or forgotten where I have come from.’

His wife Kirilly, a successful businesswoman, gave her insight into him, revealing that he has a ‘great sense of humour’.

She said he was incredibly compassionate, especially when it came to the protection of women and children.

‘He hides a lot of his emotion from the public but he gets most upset at reports of children or women being sexually abused or harmed. It obviously stems from his time as a policeman working in that area, but it’s also from being the eldest of five kids growing up in the suburbs,’ she said.

The couple have two sons, Harry, 17, and Tom, 16, and Mr Dutton also has a daughter Rebecca, 20, from his first marriage.

Mrs Dutton said he is an ‘amazing father and the kids adore him’.
