Royal Caribbean passenger reveals the chaos onboard the world’s biggest cruise ship Icon of the Sea after man jumped overboard – and the premature celebration when they thought he was saved
A passenger on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas has spoken out about the bizarre chaos that ensued on board after a man jumped from the ship on Sunday.
An unidentified man crashed from the world’s largest cruise ship shortly after it departed from Florida on Sunday on the first evening of a weeklong trip to Honduras.
Zachary Normand was aboard the ship and said travelers were aware of the missing passenger.
He was eating in the dining room with about three hundred others when the ship’s captain announced that the man had been found.
“Everyone in the dining room clapped and we said ‘yes,’” Normand told the newspaper New York Post. “We assumed he was doing well.”
A passenger on Icon of the Seas died on Sunday after jumping overboard. The ship was approximately 300 miles from the Port of Miami at the time
The man was in critical condition when he was returned to the ship where he was pronounced dead, but passengers cheered and celebrated after he was found, unaware he had died.
He says they were told there would be a rescue mission and the ship would turn around.
But it was only later that they found out that the passenger had died.
To Normandin’s surprise, he said the atmosphere on board was completely surreal as most people continued to enjoy their holidays as if nothing had happened.
‘I don’t think everyone knows the man is dying. I think it was silenced on purpose,” Normandin added.
Normandin expressed surprise at how quickly normal activities resumed despite the tragedy.
“I thought we were going straight back to Miami, I thought that was it. But no, everything continued as usual. I think people, we just try not to think about it, maybe, I don’t know,” he said.
“It seemed like more people would have said, ‘Oh my god, what’s going on,’ but no, people just went about their day. It’s just a bit dystopian.’
