Roy Keane slams ARROGANT Virgil Van Dijk for ‘disrespecting’ Man United with his post-match comments following 0-0 draw at Anfield… then argues with Daniel Sturridge for defending the Liverpool star

  • Van Dijk claimed that only one team was trying to win when Liverpool faced United
  • CHRIS SUTTON: Erik ten Hag was WRONG when he said Man United were playing well after their abysmal Champions League exit… is he losing credibility? It all starts

Roy Keane has accused Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk of being arrogant with his post-match comments about Manchester United.

Liverpool were held to a goalless draw by United at Anfield and Van Dijk was left extremely frustrated after the match, suggesting only his side were trying to win.

Those comments provoked an angry response from United legend Keane, who suggested Van Dijk was being disrespectful to United.

Keane told Sky Sports: 'Arrogance comes into football and it can happen. You leave and you're disappointed with the draw, but you have to accept the draw. You can't win every football match even if you have all these opportunities. The bottom line is that the most important statistic is the score.

'Every week we get statistics thrown at us, it's all about putting the ball in the net. That is why the attackers are of vital importance. Whatever the case with Man United's buzz or this, Liverpool had chances and they weren't taken. That's their own fault. Nothing to do with Man United's setup or Man United's injuries or whatever it is.

United legend Keane was involved in a heated debate with ex-Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge

Van Dijk suggested Liverpool were the only team trying to win the match at Anfield

Keane added that he believes Van Dijk was 'out of order' with his comments.

He said: 'I've played against Liverpool many times and they were quite happy with a draw. I didn't like his message. I think it's out of order.'

Former Liverpool striker Sturridge stated that he was convinced Van Dijk disrespected United but was instead frustrated with his own team's performance.

Sturridge said: 'I don't think he did that, I don't think he discriminated against Man United. I think every footballer around the world has respect for Man United. I'm not going to say he rejects them. “I think he's disappointed that Liverpool didn't go out today and do what they thought they could do.”

Keane then replied: 'We'll see them next week against Arsenal. Maybe Arsenal will come and try and win the game.”

Keane referred to Van Dijk's comments in which the centre-back was critical of United's approach to the game.

Van Dijk said: 'The way we played the game, with most of the ball, there was only one team trying to win the game, but unfortunately that didn't happen.

'Sometimes we shot too easily, we could have passed it to the overlapper. It is easy for me to assess the situation. Sometimes the right decision was missing, but that was frustrating because we were superior in all areas. They are buzzing about a point and we are disappointed.

'They are not in the best phase. I want to look more at my own side, we should have won that. There are big matches coming up. We have to learn from certain situations.

'Last year we didn't come in with a good feeling and we won big, but last year doesn't count now. Unfortunately we couldn't win.'

United were keen to avoid a repeat of the 7-0 defeat they suffered against Liverpool last season, with Erik ten Hag's side looking much more secure defensively.

Although they were reduced to ten men late on when Diogo Dalot was sent off, it was still a largely positive evening for United as they managed to come away from Anfield with a point.
