Roy Keane joked that Erik ten Hag was too hard on him after the jubilant Manchester United boss was unable to resist a cheeky swipe at the pundit’s expense.

Ten Hag has come in for a lot of criticism this season from television pundits, including Keane, and now this was his chance, after leading United to a 2-1 win over Manchester United in the FA Cup final, to return the favor.

Keane had spells as manager at both Sunderland, where he won the Championship, and Ipswich Town, where he was sacked midway through his second season as they fell close to the relegation zone.

Ten Hag joked that Keane was ‘struggling to manage a team’, a cheeky jab at the Irishman’s own managerial record.

However, Keane took it in stride and was keen to give Ten Hag his moment.

ITV pundit Keane told him: ‘You have to be proud of them, we have always questioned players about their quality at Man United but also about character and leadership.

‘They showed character today – which I questioned, and many people did too… you shouldn’t listen to those experts! Don’t pay attention to the experts.’

Ten Hag replied: ‘But you told me!’

Keane then decided to point the finger at fellow experts Ian Wright and Joleon Lescott.

“No, those two!” Keane laughed.

Ten Hag then went back to Keane and said: ‘You had trouble managing a team!’

‘Ah, I won a championship with Sunderland… give me some credit, ah come on! You’re too hard on me!’ said Keane.

Ten Hag tried to explain ‘what I said to you’ before Keane intervened to say ‘I agree’ as both men shared a laugh and a joke.
