Roy Keane insults ‘weak’ Man United for ‘absolutely desperate’ performance at Tottenham Hotspur, calls Marcus Rashford a ‘kid up front’ and says Frank Stapleton, 67, and Norman Whiteside, 58, would have been better off the bench than Anthony Martial !
- Roy Keane criticized Man United’s dismal performance after a 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur
Roy Keane has labeled Manchester United as ‘weak’, claiming their performance was ‘absolutely desperate’ as they fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
In a scathing post-match analysis, Keane labeled Erik ten Hag’s men as ‘the new Spurs’ as he unleashed a typically furious barrage of criticism at his former side.
United were the better team in the first half but fell apart in the second half, with goals from Pape Matar Sarr and a Lisandro Martinez own goal giving Ange Postecoglou his first win as Spurs manager.
Man Utd is the new Spurs. In despair. Absolutely desperate.’ Keane said.
“The biggest insult I always think of is teams that can’t handle it away from home, players who can’t handle it away from home.
Manchester United have so far failed to impress, despite the signing of Chelsea’s £60million Mason Mount
Keane didn’t hold back with his scathing post-game analysis of Man United’s 2-0 defeat
The expert knocked down substitute Anthony Martial, whom he compared to ex-player Stapleton
The hosts secured a 2–1 win through goals from Pape Sarr and an own goal from Lisandro Martinez
Keane continued: ‘They’re a good team, they like it when their home fans are in front of them, they have that support and energy. United leaves today.
Second half, weak, no leadership, bad goals conceded. Spores were delicious. All credit to them. It’s easy to play against Man United.’
The former midfielder, who spent 12 years with the Manchester club, was not impressed by Erik Ten Hag’s performance.
Last season, the Red Devils impressed by once again securing Champions League football, although their opening game against Wolves showed a glimpse of a shaky side.
“I said before the game they were bad against Wolves, but they got the result and will be better today. They weren’t.
“They were good in the first half hour, but the game lasts more than 90 minutes. You will not dominate for so long, but you must show some faith, desire and struggle.
Keane continued to disapprove of Ten Hag’s substitute when Antony Martial was brought on in the 85th minute.
“They’re bringing in Martial—you might as well bring in Frank Stapleton and Norman Whiteside. Martial isn’t going to get you out of trouble.
Expectations are high for Mason Mount following his £60 million move from Chelsea to Ten Hag
The goalless deadlock throughout the first half was broken by Spurs’ Pape Matar Sarr’s goal
Roy Keane described Rashford’s play ‘like a child’ because he was ‘clearly not happy there’
The comparison to the 67-year-old and 58-year-old, respectively, was not the end of Keane’s critique. He criticized Rashford who “played down the middle again (…) like a kid.”
Rashford played down the middle again. The usual. He’s like a kid up there. He is clearly not happy to play there. His body language and his first few touches suggest he doesn’t want to play down the middle.
Manchester United enjoyed a successful transfer window, signing Mason Mount for £60 million from Premier League rivals Chelsea and a £72 million Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta.
Mount’s Premier League debut against Wolves didn’t go to plan as United won 1-0 at Old Trafford on Monday. His midfield partner Casemiro often remained unreachable and it wasn’t until Christian Eriksen replaced the England man in the 68th minute that United looked more compact.
Since then, boss Ten Hag has maintained that the new signing needs time to adapt to the ‘new midfield’.
Manchester United will meet Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday.
