Roy Keane has led the charge over David de Gea’s bizarre goalkeeping error that allowed Everton to draw against Manchester United in their FA Cup tie.

The Spanish goalkeeper was caught in his near post as the ball twisted between his legs and slid into the path of Conor Coady, who had an empty net to take advantage of to tie Everton at 1-1.

During ITV’s halftime coverage, Keane said the Spanish goalkeeper appeared to have had “a few drinks” due to his unusual mistake.

When asked about the goal, the former United captain said: ‘Listen, that’s a shocking mistake by an international goalkeeper.

‘De Gea there, it’s like Carry On football. Looks like he’s had a few drinks. Shocking mistake.

It’s almost like the goalies have been sent off and the outfield players stuffed into the goal, he doesn’t know what to do! It is a horrendous mistake.

Keane’s comments compared the mistake to the slapstick comedy of the British ‘Carry On’ series of comedy films.

The man who equalized Everton turned out to be the man who gifted United a goal later in the game when Coady put the ball into his own net from a Rashford cross.

However, Keane was not the only pundit to criticize De Gea’s mistake on Friday night.

His ITV co-expert, Ian Wright, said: “WeWe are talking about a goalkeeper who, not long ago, was one of the best with his feet. I don’t know what happened there.

Wright’s former Arsenal team-mate Lee Dixon, who was on co-commentary, said at the time of the goal: ‘David De Gea has had an absolute nightmare there. I’m not sure where he thinks the ball is going. What is he doing.

I can’t believe what I just saw. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world to make saves with his feet, but this time, he just put on the gloves. What’s going through your head?

De Gea has long been considered one of the best goalkeepers with the ball at his feet, but not against Everton.

Kevin Campbell on BBC Radio 5 Live also added that De Gea “should have done better”, while Alan Stubbs on BBC Radio Merseyside described it as a “shocking mistake”.

Fans also criticized the mistake on social media, with some labeling the 32-year-old “done”.

Despite the mistake, De Gea’s teammates bailed him out and they went on to win 3ā€“1 to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

It is not the first time that Keane has attacked De Gea after a mistake against Everton.

In 2020, Everton took the lead within the first three minutes of the clash at Goodison Park, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin charging De Gea’s delayed pass.

Speaking during the Sky Sports coverage, Keane said: “As a manager or a player, you would kill him.” I swear, it’s crazy. You talk about people being too smart.

‘It just takes too long, what are you waiting for? If you’re going to make a decision, at least make it quick. These are great times for United in terms of trying to get into the top four.

‘You’ve got your experienced goalkeeper, what are you waiting for? There’s almost a bit of arrogance in that, “watch me, give me time.”

They almost think they are outfield players. He would have lynched him at halftime, he wouldn’t have time for that. I know goalkeepers can make mistakes, but there’s no excuse for that.
